What is Universal Design?

It’s ALL about ACCESS!

Access for All

• 1973—Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act banned discrimination on basis of disability for recipients of federal funds

• July 26, 1990 –Americans with Disabilities Act prohibited discrimination resulting from inaccessible buildings, etc.

Why is Universal Design different from modifying existing structures to accommodate people with disabilities?

Traditional Approach UDL ApproachAssumes that the curricula is fixed: accommodations, modifications, and even differentiation, are retrofits that must be made in order to deal with student diversity.

Assumes that the inflexible curricula is disabled: curricula needs to be designed or redesigned to meet the needs of a wide diversity of students from the start.
