WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

COMMUNICATION

Communication is the activity of conveyinginformation. It is the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech,

signals, writing, or behavior.

COMMUNICATION (CONT)

There is a process by which we assign and convey meaning in an attempt to create shared understanding. This process requires a vast repertoire of skills in intrapersonal and interpersonal processing, listening, observing, speaking, questioning, analyzing, and evaluating. Use of these processes is developmental and transfers to all areas of life: home, school, community, work, and beyond. It is through communication that collaboration and cooperation occur.

THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS

1. Communication begins the SENDER thinking about what to include in the message.

2. The MESSAGE is ENCODED in a MEDIUM and conveyed using a CHANNEL.

3. The RECEIVER (or audience) DECODES the Message.

4. The receiver sends a FEEDBACK, which is evidence of the message being communicated successfully or unsuccessfully.

5. The original sender then receives the feedback and the LOOP closes.

and selects a MEDIUM and sends a

FEEDBACK
