Women Painters of Washington Community Resource Catalog

Women Painters of Washington is an association of professional artists from throughout the state. We have a rich history, which began in 1930 in a summer portrait painting class at the Art Institute of Seattle, a predecessor to the Seattle Art Museum. Over the years our members have received numerous awards and honors, have added artwork to private and corporate collections, and have published and exhibited throughout the US and overseas.

As a group WPW has exhibited in museums and galleries in Washington State, UK, Europe, the Middle East and Asia; arranged cultural exchanges with artists in Japan and Ireland; sponsored a Statewide Open Show; launched a website: womenpainters.com; opened and maintain a gallery showcasing our work in the Columbia Center Building (Columbia Tower, Seattle); in connection with several of our overseas exhibitions, our members have lectured, taught and served in residency programs. Several years ago we celebrated our 75th anniversary with an exhibition at the historic Whatcom County Museum in Bellingham. Requests for the beautiful accompanying catalogue have come from across the country.

With this resource guide we are launching a community outreach project that brings together a wide range of services our members offer, organized by category, into one, easy to use directory. The information is designed to be useful to groups as well as individuals.

At the back of the catalogue is a listing including: name, city, website and media for each of our members.

In commissioning artwork, careful attention to finding an artist whose style appeals is important. Members of Women Painters of Washington are available to help with all aspects of fund raising, from participating in groups that are organized to solicit funds or writing grant proposals etc.

The computer skills in the membership take many forms, and some of them are not directly related to art. Art-related skills include teaching the use of programs for creating or manipulating art, such as Adobe Photoshop. Other members are adept at creating or maintaining web sites, a decidedly non-trivial task. Some members are also skilled in the use of more technical aspects of computer use and in the teaching of those skills.

There are many forms of public art. Outdoor forms can include performance, sculpture, and murals. Paintings can be displayed as indoor public art, or used for the design of large scale outdoor or indoor murals. Often public art is commissioned by civic bodies, such as city, state, or county government (1% for art programs generate many opportunities). Large corporations often solicit art for display in or near their headquarters.
