How To Write an Introduction for a Compare and Contrast Character Essay

1. Discuss the topic(s) and/or theme(s) in the

novel.

2. Introduce the characters and the text.

3. State the thesis statement.

Many people judge other people based on rumors and innuendo rather than getting to know a person’s true character. These negative feelings can change a person’s life forever. In To Kill a Mockingbird, people draw cruel and unfair conclusions about Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. In reality, both of the characters are innocent and harmless; however, where Boo Radley shows courage, Tom Robinson is cowardly.

Using Quotations in Your Body Paragraphs Quotations That Include Dialogue Atticus says, “ ‘[People] never really understand a person until [they] consider things from [their] point of view…until [they] climb into his skin and walk around in it’ “ (30).

Transitions Use transitions in and between paragraphs.

Conclusion

1. Restate your thesis statement. 2. Call to “action.” Include an opinion that

involves “deep thinking.” Leave your reader with something to think about.
