The main goal in this compartment is to conduct multiple resource management forcurrent and future generations.
The topography mainly flat to low with conifer swamps. Rubicon sand andHoughton Muck are the two soils. The Rubicon sand, which is naturally low in fertility, carries the upland species in this compartment and the muck soils are for the cedar and low marsh areas. Most of the compartment falls into the Munising moraine II LTA and the cedar types are within the Cusino Swamp LTA.
The compartment has a broken ownership that is mixed with regular private lands. The compartment has high use from the surrounding properties.
Currently under review by Michigan Natural Features Inventory (MNFI).
None.
The entire compartment (minus stands 2,3 and 58) are an SCA for deer yard management.
Stoney, Humphrey, and Prarie Creeks are found within thiscompartment. Standard BMP’s should be implemented to control sediment sources from adjacent uplands. Fine sediments such as silt and sand negatively affect natural reproduction of fish, decrease the diversity ofaquatic invertebrate and fish taxa, and result in lower overall fish populations.
This fragmented compartment lies north of Shingleton. Portions arelocated along Percy road west of town while the remainder is found on the north end of the Petrel Deeryard east of town. Pre-settlement data show northern hardwoods and cedar/spruce swamps as the dominant foresttypes within the compartment. Within the northern hardwoods, sugar maple, yellow birch, and hemlock prevailed with only a small amount of beech, white pine, and ironwood mixed in. In the lowland cedar and spruce stands tamarack, elm, red maple, and ash were also present. The species composition of the swamp conifer stands appears to be similar to that found circa 1850. The northern likely have reduced abundance of hemlock and yellow birch. The northwestern corner of this compartment contains more aspen than found in the pre-settlement times. This compartment lies within the Petrel Deer Yard. As such, wildlife habitat management objective include maintaining the closed canopy coniferous cover, maintaining the old camp 3 openings as a break out area, and re-establishing hemlock as an important component with the northern hardwood system.
Surface sediments consist of an end moraine of medium-textured till and peat and muck. The glacial drift thickness varies between 0 and 50 feet. The Ordovician Prairie du Chien (PdC) Formation subcrops below the glacial drift. The PdC could be used for stone. There is a gravel pit in Section 19 and potential appears to be good on the uplands. There is no commercial oil and gas production in the UP.

Additional Compartment Information:
Access is fair. Most of the upland areas have some kind of vehicle access.
none
The snowmobile trail runs through section 8.
There is not a large wildfire issue for this compartment. The timber types are mainlyupland hardwood or conifer swamps.

A coldwater lake has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species to persist from year to year. Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 200.
Cold Water LakeSCA
A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210.
Cold Water Stream
SCA
An area that provide some specific need for the life cycle of wildlife species, including State Wildlife Areas and Waterfowl Production Areas, deer wintering complexes in lowland conifer communities, grassland openings and savannas. Habitat areas are distinct from critical habitat designated for recovery of endangered or threatened species (such as Kirtland's warbler or piping plover areas) in that they are more general in nature, are not primarily associated with threatened or endangered species, and are not covered by species recovery plans that are developed in cooperation with Federal agencies.
Habitat AreaSCA
These areas provide facilities and lands specifically dedicated for research, or other purposes. They include the 5,847 acre Forest Fire Experiment Station, the 12,000 acre Houghton Lake Wildlife Research Area, the Beaver Islands Archipelago Wildlife Research Area (that includes most of Garden Island, all of High and Hog Islands, all state owned land on Beaver, South Fox and North Fox Islands), the Cusino Wildlife Research Area, the 3,000 acre Hunt Creek Fisheries Research Station, the 125 acre Wyman Nursery, and over 144,000 acres of Military Lands.

400 51.0 SCA - deer yard-deer yard considerations. Scheduled for a burn. Former stand # is 23 - FTP # w41-752. burned spring 1998. WL would like this burned again. Camp 3
Openings. Stand to be treated to maintane wildlife opening, use inmates.[4-15-10] Kevin sent a note to Dan Kennedy asking this to be removed from the
WLD burn list.[6-14-10] Received a completion Kevin Swanson, WLD biologist. Most encroaching
trees within the opening have been removed other than large red oak that were planted last year. Next step is to disk the opening twice in August and then plant
with a perennial mix after fertilizing.[6-14-10] WLD is submitting a change of OI to disk and plant this opening. The opening maintenance has been completed, but the planting and fertilizing will
require a change of OI. A FTP (W41-1460) is being circulated for approval. The proposed change is, "DISK, FERTILIZE AND PLANT GRASSES AND LEGUMES
TO BENEFIT FOREST WILDLIFE, ESPECIALLY DEER. AMEND SOIL CONDITIONS AS APPROPRIATE, FOLLOWED BY PERENNIAL FORAGE
PLANTING. ONLY NATIVE OR NATURALIZED GRASSES WILL BE USED." Cult codes have been changed from 2-1-1 to 1-6-1 to reflect the proposed change of OI.
[6-17-10] FTP/OI change has been approved.[9/25/2010] Received partial completion report. Treated about 40 acres with a cost at about $239.50 per acre. Needs a regen check in one year.his stand has been
mowed with a brush hog as a part of opening maintenance at a cost of 548.12. FTP will be kept open to allow continued habitat work. (3/10/14RH) 210 apple trees were planted in the spring of 2014 under FTP #w41-1460 at a cost of $3811.50.
