Composite Family of Plants• The largest family of flowering plants. This is the
family that goldenrod flower belong to.
• God designed the composite to be very showy
plants that would easily attract the insects the
plants depend on for pollination.
Composite• Composite means “made of many parts”.
• The Flower of a composite is actually not just one
flower but is a hundred flowers, called flower head.

Composite• The Petals help to attract the insect to the flowers.
• Some composite flower does not have both the disk or ray
flower

1. Daisy• Come from the Old English Word “day’s eye”
because the blossom close at nigth and opens at
dawn.
2. Aster• Greek word: Star
• Look like daisy but has more than one flower head
3. Black Eyed Susan• Are sometimes called the yellow daisies• Looks like a daisy with yellow ray flower and brown disk flower
• Have hairy stems that are difficult to pick
4. Butter and eggs(toadflax)• Has the color of egg yolks
• The flowers are full of
nectar which attracts
bumblebees
5. Ironweed• Water loving plant
• Can be troublesome on pasture
grounds as it is not edible by
livestock and spreads quickly.
6. Cardinal Flower• Grows up to 4 ft tall
• Has brilliant red blossoms which attracts hummingbirds
5. Goldenrod• Small flowers are arranged in a stalk• The blossoms produces large amounts of pollen and nectar
which attracts all sorts of insects

8. Jewelweed (touch me not)• Only hummingbirds and bumblebees have long enough
tongues to reach the nectar deep within the flowers of
jewelweeds.
• The ripe seeds of jewelweed will burst open on the slightest
touch
9. Queen Anne’s Lace• Is a flower that is made up of many cluster of tiny white
flowers with one dark red or purple flower in the center.
• The plant smells like the carrot plant
• In late summer the flowers curl up, giving the plant the name
“bird’s nest”
10. Chicory• The flowers are bright in the morning but will wilt by
noon. The roots are sometimes ground to make a
coffee like beverage.
11. Tansy• Looks like daisies that have
had their white rays removed.
• Sometimes called bitter
buttons
12. Dandelion• It has ray flowers but no disk flowers
• The flower heads open and close every day
13. Thistle• Its very hard to pick up a thistle flower.

• The Goldfinch or wild canary
• Name came from it’s yellow color and that it is a
finch(seed eater)
• Has beautiful song and always twitters away
• The female has a duller yellow color
• Eats weed seeds, fruits, aphids and caterpillars
