For 17 holiday seasons, thelights have been shining brightly on the 36.5-metre-tall tree consisting of 25,000 energy-efficient bulbssuspended on scaffolding.The tree is lit from late November until January, and funds raised each year aredonated to local charitable organizations.

Intersection wherewoman knockeddown site of 94accidents between2009 and 2013

An 83-year-old Kelowna womanhas died after being hit by a vehi-cle in a busy intersection.

At 11:19 a.m. Tuesday, RCMPCentral Okanagan TrafficServices responded to an accidentat the intersection of KLO Roadand Richter Street.

A 72-year-old Kelowna driverattempted to turn left onto Richterand hit the 83-year-old woman,who was in the crosswalk, knock-ing her to the ground.

The pedestrian suffered serious

injuries and was transported toKelowna General Hospital, whereshe later succumbed to herinjuries.

Traffic Services and the RCMPtraffic constructionist are work-ing with the BC Coroners Servicein the investigation.

The intersection of KLO andRichter is known for accidents,according to ICBC.

Between 2009 and 2013, therewere 94 accidents at that intersec-tion. The highest number of inci-dents occurred in 2009, with 26accidents, and the lowest numberwas in 2011, with 14 accidents.

The two most common intersec-tions for accidents in Kelownaare Harvey Avenue and SpallRoad, and Dilworth Drive andHarvey.

In 2013, Harvey and Spall wasthe top intersection for accidents,with a total of 95.

hearing this week.Home Instead Senior Care’s

annual Santa to a Senior programgrants wishes to seniors throughnon-profit organizations, retailersand volunteers.

When Kristin Stratulat fromSeniors Outreach askedChandler, 96, what she wanted forChristmas, Chandler wished forthe gift of hearing.

Home Instead Senior Care thencontacted Colin VanBergen atNexGen Hearing, who setChandler up with a pair ofdonated hearing aids.

VanBergen started a hearingaid donation program 2 1/2 years

ago when he saw how many peo-ple were living without hearingaids because they could not affordthem.

“One of my biggest frustrationsis when people can’t afford to doanything about their hearingloss,” said VanBergen. “Morethan 75 per cent of people withhearing loss do not do anythingabout it.”

Over the past 2 1/2 years,VanBergen has fitted 30 peoplewith donated hearing aids fromothers who have died or don’t usethem anymore.

After giving Chandler hers aweek ago, VanBergen decided totake it one step further and con-tact one of his hearing aid suppli-ers to ask if it could donate new,advanced hearing aids toChandler.
