Second Conditional

If-clause Result clausePast Simple would + Verb

Notice that in the if-clause we can use were with I and He/She/It

If Jane were/was here, she would certainly help us.

If I were/was French, I’d live in Paris. There is one expression where we always use were:

If I were you, I’d tell him. (Not If I was you…).

Notice that we can use could + infinitive in both clauses:

If you could meet a famous person, who would it be?

If the weather was fine, we could go to the zoo.

We can use Second Conditional to talk about situations that are unlikely in the future:

The world would be a better place if there were no more wars.

Tom says, that if he won a lottery, he would give money to poor people.
