Lets heat through

Conductor

This is the key fact about a conductor. If

one part gets hot, the heat spreads to

the rest of it too.

Does not let the heat through

Insulator

An insulator is the opposite of a

conductor. So it does not let heat

through.

Metal

Conductor

Metals are good conductors.

Base of a saucepan

Conductor

The heat must get through the bottom of the saucepan into the food. So the base must be a conductor.

Plastic

Insulator

Plastics do not let heat through them. They are insulators.

Table mat

Insulator

The job of a table mat is to stop heat getting from a hot plate or mug onto

the table. It must be an insulator.

Saucepan handle

Insulator

The handle must stay cool even when the

saucepan is hot. So it must be an insulator

so heat does not pass along it.

Radiator

Conductor

A radiator is full of hot water (or hot oil).

The heat from this must pass through

the radiator into the room.

Cold tile floor (ie which feels cold with bare feet)

Conductor

This is a tricky example! Your feet are at body

temperature – ie warmer than the floor. The tiles conduct this heat away so they still feel cold.

Suitable as a layer in your loft

Insulator

The padding you put in your loft is there to

stop heat escaping from the house. It

must be an insulator.
