One of our greatest strengths and contributions to the community is our kosher catering, including our Meals on Wheels program. This program is a double mitzvah. It eases the strain for many who find it difficult to prepare their own meals, while at the same time offers a rewarding volunteer opportunity. After more than a year of planning and building, we’re thrilled to move our Meals on Wheels program to our brand new kitchen, located at Reena, a partner organi-
zation that supports people living with developmental disabilities. This beautiful, large, new kitchen is now being operated by our Bernard Betel Centre staff. In the near future, Reena clients will be trained on food preparation skills to enable them to work alongside our team. Adding a third mitzvah! We are thankful for the incredible efforts of our volunteers and staff who are contributing to the dignity, inclu-sion and independence for seniors and Reena clients. To order our kosher Meals on Wheels, please call 416-225-2112, ext. 134, or to volunteer, please call ext. 127.The move of our Meals on Wheels program to Reena frees up space in our kitchen for catering. Our talented, dedicated kitchen staff can prepare delicious home-cooked food for any occasion. By choos-ing catering from Betel, you are helping to financially support the centre by letting us cater for you, so we hope you will think of us for your Passover Seder and events all year-round.For another way to support Betel, join us at the Toronto Challenge on Sunday, June 14! Check out page 23 or call ext. 130 for more information on the Toronto Challenge. Finally, thank you to all that submitted entries to the contest to change the name of The Monitor. Our winner is Selma Lis with her submission Connect!Wishing you and your families a happy, healthy holiday! Chag Pesach Sameach.
Chag Pesach Sameach.

SOUTHERN ONTARIO BEFORE THE EUROPEANS: 9,000 YEARS IN 9 WEEKSHumans have been living in Southern Ontario since the end of the Ice Age, around 11,000 years, when they first arrived here from Siberia. Starting as nomadic hunter-gatherers, preying on the remaining mammoths and mastodons, they made their way toward Ontario. Here, some of those Paleo-Indians began to settle down and adapt to the local environment. Over time, they acquired agriculture, built large villages, and interacted with other communities across Eastern North America. MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM AT REENA
The Bernard Betel Centre Food Services department has moved our expanded Meals on Wheels program to the Reena Toby and Henry Battle Centre building at 927 Clark Avenue West in Thornhill. In cooperation with Reena, the Bernard Betel Centre will be able to expand Meals on Wheels with increased kitchen capacity and compete in food supply tenders, which are currently limited due to our existing small kitchen. Our vision is that the Bernard Betel Reena Culinary Training Program will provide training to approximately 20-25 Reena participants each year in an intensive 12-week training period. Participants will be taught cooking and food services under the supervision and guidance of our Betel professional chefs who have experience working with individuals with barriers to employment. By addressing the root causes of poverty, the Bernard Betel Reena Culinary Training Program is aimed at empowering these individuasl, many whom face barriers to employment by providing training opportunities to learn job and life skills in the Betel Reena kitchen. Reena will enhance their client education and skills improvement process by providing professional food services training and experience. The Bernard Betel Centre’s Café remains open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday and is available for catering of special occasions, take-out or life cycle events. For further information about this program or how to become a Meals on Wheels Volunteer Driver, please visit www.betelcentre.org/meals-on-wheels or contact Alla at 416 225-2112, ext. 134 or allak@betelcentre.org, or Mark at ext. 185 or marka@betelcentre.org.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES
Cheryl Besner 416-225-2112, ext. 127 cherylb@betelcentre.org
We Salute Bonnie Baker, Immediate Past President, Board of Directors
TO LEARN ABOUT OUR CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES CONTACT:
We are very pleased to announce that the review and update of our Volunteer Services Policies has been completed and training sessions with our volunteer team are underway. Last winter we partnered with York University School of Health Policy and Management. Five students took on the task of reviewing our 2012 policies and preparing a draft document incorporating best prac-tices in the volunteer management field and relevant legislative requirements. They presented the revised draft policies to our management team in March.
What would we do without Bonnie Baker? Bonnie was elected to the Bernard Betel Centre Board of Directors in September 2010. She has been an incredibly fierce advocate for the Bernard Betel Centre holding numerous senior leadership roles and functions. She is currently the Immediate Past President of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Governance Committee. Throughout 2018-2019, Bonnie demonstrated her strong advocacy and project manage-ment skills as Board Chair, navigating the Centre through the revi-sions of the Betel By-Laws and Board policies.
Now retired, Bonnie has been volunteering on the board for nine years. Along with our Executive Director, Gail Gould, Bonnie co-chaired the ‘Betel at 50’ celebrations and continues to volunteer at a local synagogue. In addition to her great professionally achievements over the past year, Bonnie’s proudest moment over the past year was acquiring the title of Bubby!
Thank you Bonnie for all you have done on behalf of the Centre. We are privileged to have you on the Board and indebted to you for all you have done. Todah Rabah! We congratulate Bonnie on reaching her 10 year milestone year of service. She will be honoured at the breakfast recep-tion in April along with 29 other volunteers also reaching milestone years of service.
University, Bonnie headed west to Regina to begin her public service career with a brief stint in the Saskatchewan government working in human services, primarily doing staffing and job eval-uation. Moving back east, Bonnie joined the Ontario Public Service where she worked in policy analysis, policy development and program/project management in a variety of areas including classification standards, compensation policy, pay equity, business continuity planning, pan-demic planning and security screening. Her most recent position was as a senior policy advisor in labour dispute contingency planning.

НЕ ЗАБУДЬТЕ!
Over the summer and fall the policies were presented to the Bernard Betel Centre staff and two volunteer focus groups. Feedback from all groups was collected and included in the final draft of the document. In addition to participating on one of the focus groups, we thank Judith Gutt-man who provided her expertise in editing the document.
We thank the management team and staff for their input. Special thanks to our Focus Group participants: Ron Berman, Judith Guttman, Sharon Gotter, Raia Ilana, Rivka Jakubovic, Donna Lindo, Sharon List, Carmen Muller, Harold Rosenfeld and Eda Szwajcer. You eagerly took on the task of carefully reading through each policy and providing us with a perspective through the lens of those who will be most impacted by the policies, our volunteers. You all did an amazing job!
