Construction Workshop 5th May 2014
Design brief: -Using the materials provided, construct a structure that will span a 1m gap and be as strong and rigid as possible, enough to substantially withstand a point load from directly above. Consider:
• The material-what works best in tension and compression-why? • In what way will your structure utilise the material inherited qualities • How will your design maximise the load bearing capacity?
Materials provided:
• 3mmx100mmx1200mm brace plywood X2 • 30mmx40mmx1200mm structural pine X2
Extra materials provided: • Handsaw • Measuring tape • Various types of nails • Bench hooks • Hammer • Power drill • Timber screws • Square

Design:
Note: Plasterboard nails were used as they have a wider surface area on the head, thus a greater purchase between the pine and plywood

Stress Testing: The device that we used was similar to the device shown here, however it was hand driven.

Digital Pressure readout
Crosshead
Supports
Specimen
Impact point
Deflection ruler

Stress Testing Result: Our structure withstood 380kg of stress before failing in the centre
• Structure shattered in the centre where the mass was applied
• Shattered where a nailed had weakened the structural integrity
• Faired pretty well relative to
other designs-small fracture rather than complete collapse
Peer designs:

Tutorial CBD Construction Site Visit
522 Collins St Overview: As a group we visited the Construction Site of 522 Collins St, soon to be new, Premium office space. We were given an overview of the various components and construction principled employed in the buildings construction and fabrication. The following show the construction techniques employed on site:
• Tension rods: increase the strength and rigidity of concrete once set
• Reinforcing for concrete
• Corrugated alloy sacrificial formwork for concrete
• Temporary formwork for concrete
• Onsite power
• Tension rods

• Concrete pour process: Pumped up form cement trucks on the base level floor, pumped into the steel reinforcing’s, levelled, extruded and settled
• Concrete pump
• Bundles of steel rods for the tension casing
• Tension casing

• Hanging support system
• Space for glazed curtain wall system installation
• Theodolite
• Glazed curtain wall units
• Installation process: units are hung from a series of cantilevered rails, which are fixed to the above concrete floor. They are then connected with a system of weather proof stripping and galvanised steel brackets. All curtail walls are non loadbearing
