“Cónsul por Un Día” es un programa del Departamento de Asuntos Comunitarios de Consulmex San José que reconoce anualmente a un pequeño estudiante de origen mexicano del quinto grado de primaria que, por sus calificaciones, ha alcanzado la excelencia académica y ha demostrado liderazgo. En 2014, el reconocimiento fue otorgado al niño Luis Omar Villalobos Beltrán, de la escuela Horace Mann Elementary, de San José.

Program Overview

Every year, the Consulate General of Mexico in San Jose grants a 5th grader of Mexican Ancestry with the postof Consul General for 24 hours. The recognition conferred is based on exceptional academic performance andremarkable leadership skills.

Background:Elementary students from low—income families of MexicanAncestry face several challenges to succeed in the American SchoolSystem, including economic difficulties and a tough language barrier.As they grow up, students lack motivation to further their studies , orpursue a college degree.

Goals:• Recognize students for their academic and leadership achievements

and encourage them to continue their education.• Award the winner with a computer and a scholarship. The

scholarship will allocate resources towards the winner’s collegeeducation as a means to alleviate financial stress

Selection Process

Students from Horace Mann Elementary, OlinderElementary and Washington Elementary

• Write and essay about what Mexico means to the participant

• Interview with the Deputy Consul General and the Mexican Consul for Community Affairs
