UKWA has created a series of informative factsheets and videos as part of the Government’s ‘Get Ready for Brexit’ campaign, which is aimed at helping businesses fully prepare for when UK leaves the European Union.
The areas covered by the UKWA guides include:
• Customs, Tariffs & Procedures, by Barbara Scott of Customs Associates Ltd
• Commercial Contracts, by Mike Burns, Partner at Weightmans LLP
• Incoterms 2020, by Lesley Batchelor OBE, Director General of the Institute of Export (IoE&IT)
• HR & Employment Law, by Sue Watson of HR Solutions Ltd
• Plant, Animal & Forest Products, by Chris Sturman of Craymere Consulting
The team of UKWA retained experts also gathered to provide specialist advice at an interactive workshop and networking lunch, held at Stratford upon Avon on
Friday 25th October. Attendees were able to put their questions to each speaker, including Heather Wallace, International Group Manager of the Road Haulage Association, who joined the event to explain the constraints operators will be working within and what they need from others in the supply chain to minimise disruption.
The factsheets and videos are free to download from the UKWA website.

UKWA Annual House of Lords LuncheonOver 100 senior personnel from UKWA member companies, key suppliers to the logistics industry and supply chain directors from some of the leading global brands that belong to UKWA’s Logistics Users Group – including British Airways, Mercedes-Benz, Nando’s, Tata Global Brands and Urban Outfitters – attended this year’s UKWA Parliamentary Luncheon on Wednesday 9th October.
The event, which was supported by Kronos – the workforce management solutions specialist., brought warehousing and logistics industry professionals together with influential Government advisers, so it was perhaps no surprise that Brexit was on the agenda.
Guest speakers, including Tony Thomas, Deputy Director of the pan-Government Border Delivery Group and the Home Office’s
Carrie Golding, updated members on the Government’s preparations for the UK’s planned departure from the EU.
UKWA’s CEO, Peter Ward, commented: “The House of Lords is a fitting venue for an occasion with so many prominent members of the UK’s logistics community as well as key policy influencers, and we are grateful to our President, The Baroness McIntosh of Pickering, for hosting us.
“As the voice of the logistics industry, UKWA is constantly exploring how best it can work collaboratively with the policy makers and other stakeholders to overcome the challenges confronting our sector, and the Association has been actively advising the Government on our industry’s requirements throughout the Brexit planning process.”

UKWA has fulfilled its ambition to raise £75,000 for Transaid to mark its 75th Anniversary and had opportunity to present a ‘big’ cheque to the charity’s Patron, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, at the annual Transaid Showcase, held in London on Thursday 24th October.
Platinum sponsors of UKWA’s 75th year, Bis Henderson, Clipper Logistics, Jungheinrich, SnapFulfil and Toyota Materials Handling, attended with UKWA CEO Peter Ward and Chair Nicola Ridges-Jones. All were introduced to The Princess Royal and received warm thanks for their generous support.
According to Transaid CEO, Caroline Barber, UKWA’s fundraising enabled the charity to unlock match funding from a consortium of donors including Grand
Challenges Canada and Medicines for Malaria Venture, in turn facilitating major advances for Transaid’s MAMaZ Against Malaria (MAM) project, an innovative approach to beating malaria in Zambia.
“The MAM campaign has been a great success. Since the project began, there has been a 96% reduction in children under six dying of severe malaria in Serenje District,” she said. “UKWA’s fantastic contribution of £75,000 has enabled Transaid and our partners to increase our activities in the two core districts where we work and reach up to three new districts which is wonderful news for the communities in that area. We are delighted and grateful to everyone who helped UKWA reach their £75,000 target!”

There have been questions about what will happen to Health & Safety laws when we leave the EU, so UKWA Associate Members Citation have been looking at some common misconceptions and setting the record straight.
Myth #1 – All Health & Safety red tape will disappear once the UK leaves the EUQ. Will laws become less strict withoutEurope’s influence?
It’s unlikely that so many laws and regulation will suddenly be reversed after leaving the EU. Commitment to managing risks and ensuring the safety of workers will remain a priority. Any significant
change to that commitment could impact the UK’s international reputation.
Myth #2 – Health & Safety regulation will become less strict after BrexitQ. Will employers’ and businesses’ dutiesbe relaxed or diluted after Brexit?
Good risk management saves businesses money, reduces incidents and improves reputation. According to the HSE, 30.7 million working days are lost due to work-related illness and injury every year. If Health & Safety duties were relaxed, this figure will only rise, placing a huge burden on businesses nationwide.
Myth #3 – Health & Safety regulation will go back to ‘the good old days’ Q. Will leaving the EU mean the end ofrisk assessments, working time regulationsand other EU directives?
There’s no chance that the UK will reverse any of the great strides been made in the last four decades. Indeed, regulation around new and emerging technologies has the potential to move much more quickly.
Well-prepared employers should continue to make Health & Safety compliance a priority, whatever the outcome of Brexit.
