TheGrimaldiForum,Monacowillpresentamajorexhibi:on,FrancisBacon,MonacoandFrenchCulturefrom2Julyto4September2016.Theexhibi:on,curatedbyMar:nHarrison,authoroftheforthcomingFrancisBaconCatalogueRaisonné(publica:onApril2016),willtakeplacewiththesupportofTheEstateofFrancisBaconinLondon,andtheFrancisBaconMBArtFounda:onbasedinMonaco.

FrancisBacon’sculturalorienta:onwas,toanextraordinarydegree,towardsFrance,andTheGrimaldiForumexhibi:onwillexplorethear:st’sworkfromthisuniqueangle:theimportantinfluenceofFrenchartandcultureonBacon’swork,andhisyearsinMonacothathadacrucialimpactonhisoeuvre.Majortriptychsaswellasfamousandlesswell-knownpain:ngswillbedisplayedthema:callyandwillshowdirectandindirectrela:onshipstoFranceandMonaco.Oneofthefeaturesofthisexhibi:onwillbetocross-referencemajorworksofthemasterswhoinspiredthear:st.

FrancisBaconinMonacoandFrance

FrancisBacon(borninDublinin1909,diedinMadridin1992,livedinLondon,ParisandMonaco)wasimmediatelytakenwithFrenchculturewhenhemadehisfirstvisittoParisinhisteens.Inthespringof1927,aged17,hespent:meinChan:llyandinthatsameyear,whenvisi:nganexhibi:onatthePaulRosenbergGallery,heencounteredPicasso’sworkswhichinspiredhimtotakeuppain:ng.

Later,a]ersellingPainOng1946toEricaBrausen,whowastobecomehisartdealertwoyearslater,Baconle]LondonforthePrincipalityofMonacoinJuly1946,andlivedthereun:ltheearlyfi]ies.ItwasinMonacothathepaintedhisfirst“pope”,mainlyinspiredbyVelázquez’sPortraitofPopeInnocentX,therethathestartedtopaintonthereverseofhiscanvas,andtherethathebegantoconcentratehisworkonthehumanform.Itwasadecisivestageinhiscareer,whichledhimtobeingrecognisedasoneofthemostenigma:cpost-warfigura:vear:sts.

BaconreturnedfrequentlythroughouthislifetoMonacoandtheSouthofFrance.Inthefi]iesandthesix:esheo]encamewithhiscircleoffriendsfromLondon’sSohoandfromWivenhoe.Forthefollowingtwentyyearshecouldo]enbeseenwithhisParisianfriendsandwithJohnEdwards,bothhismuseandhiscompanion.In1975hetookastudioapartmentinParis,whichhekeptun:l1987.ThereheexecutednumerousportraitsofhisParisianfriends,notablyMichelLeirisandJacquesDupin.

ThisisthefirstmajoreventtobeorganizedundertheauspicesofthenewlyfoundedFrancis BaconMBArtFounda:on,inauguratedinMonacoon28October2014(tocoincidewiththear:st’sbirthday)byHSHPrinceAlbertII.Thisprivatenon-profitins:tu:onistheonlyfounda:onintheworlddedicatedtoFrancisBacon.Itsmissionistopromoteadeeperunderstandingofthework,lifeandworkingmethodsofFrancisBaconthroughouttheworldwithapar:cularfocusontheperiodduringwhichthear:stlivedandworkedinMonacoandFrance.

TheFounda:onwasestablishedbyMajid Boustany,whofirst cameacross Francis Bacon’sworkwhilst takinga course inArt History alongside his academic studies inBusiness andInterna:onal Rela:ons.AnencounterwithBacon’s seminal triptychThreeStudiesforFiguresattheBaseofaCrucifixion(1944)atthe TateGallerystartedBoustanyona pathofdiscoverythat con:nues to this day: “Bacon’s enigma:c triptych challenged interpreta:on andtriggeredinmetheneedtoexplorehisworld”,thefoundersays.

Boustany’simmersion intoBacon’s oeuvregoes backtothe1990s; hequickly discoveredthat the ar:st had lived andworked inMonaco from July 1946 to the early 1950sandfrequently returnedtothe Principalitythroughouthis life.“Bacono]enmadereferences tohis lifeandwork in Monaco” saysthe founder,whohimselfhas calledMonacohomeformorethantwentyyears.Boustany decidedtohousehis Founda:ononthegroundfloor oftheVilla Elise,21Boulevardd’Italie, situatedintheheartofMonaco.The ins:tuteis openthroughouttheyear toscholars,arthistorians andtothegeneral public,twicea week,byappointmentonly.

The founder has been building over a number of years a comprehensive art collec:ondedicated to Francis Bacon of more than 2500 items that now includes: a selec:onofpain:ngs by Bacon from the late 1920s to theearly 1980s and work by key peers andinfluences,auniquephotographicarchiveonthear:stbyleadingphotographers as well asby his friendsand lovers, acomprehensive collec:on of Bacon’sexhibi:on catalogues, awide selec:on of thear:st’s graphic works, auniquearray of working documents fromBacon’s various studios, a number ofrareitems fromBacon’sfurnitureandrug designerperiodandalibrarydedicatedtothear:stofferinganessen:alresourceforscholars.
