Quantum has thearchitecture thatmeets your needs
Whether your require-ments are for improvedspace utilization, reduced installationcosts, high perfor-mance, or connectivityto HMIs and host com-puters, Quantum hasan I/O architecture thatfits. Combining thesedifferent I/O architec-tures with Quantum’swide range of commu-nication options, anoptimal control systemcan be configured andinstalled to meet themost challengingcontrol requirements.Quantum has thecapacity to expandwhenever you need it.
Quantum I/O can beused in three majorarchitectures tomeet control systemrequirements:
• Local I/O
• Remote I/O
• Distributed I/O
Quantum back-planes and powersupplies fit whereyou need them
Quantum backplanesuse a common strat-egy so every slot inevery backplane iselectrically identical, with no slotdependencies. Alladdressing is done viasoftware, making mod-ule replacement plugand play. Backplanemodels are available in2, 3, 4, 6, 10, and 16slot versions. For re-duction of spare parts, the same back- planesare used in Local, Re-mote, and DistributedQuantum I/O racks.
Providing power to theQuantum backplaneand protection to thesystem from noise andswings in nominal volt-ages, Quantum powersupplies ensure thesystem will operate intypical electrical plantenvironments. In theevent of unforeseenelectrical problems, they protect the systemby initiating a safe andorderly shutdown.
Quantum Local I/O,from simple singlerack solutions tounlimitedpossibilities
Need a few I/O pointsin a central location?Take a backplane, putin a power supply andCPU, add up to 14 I/Omodules and you havea single rack controllerwith up to 2048discrete Local I/O.
Need high speeddiscrete performancethat only interrupts canprovide? Local I/Oprovides interrupt andimmediate I/O servicesto increase machineproductivity.
Need to communicateto HMIs or host sys-tems? Use the built-inModbus and/or theModbus port on theQuantum CPU.
Need more QuantumI/O than you can fit intothe Local rack? Ex-pand to Distributed I/Ofrom the controller’sModbus Port, or add aRemote I/O head endmodule.

This ensuresfast deterministic con-trol of the process fromthe CPU’s applicationprogram, and makesthe Quantum HotStandby System’sbumpless transferpossible, and providesthe safest possible op-erating mode of anycontroller on the market.
When combined with984 Ladder Logic theSegment Schedulercomplements the highperformance of thenetwork by providingparallel processing ofI/O servicing and logicsolving to provide thehighest possible systemthroughput.
Based on the S908Remote I/O technologyof the Modicon 984Family, this networkis compatible withexisting installations ofModicon I/O includingthe 800, 500, 200 Se-ries, and Square DSy/Max I/O.
Flexible DistributedI/O provides costeffective servicingof small I/O drops
For applications thatrequire small dropsdistributed over manylocations, Quantumprovides the Distrib-uted I/O (DIO) archi-tecture.
Since each QuantumCPU comes standardwith a Modbus Plusport, you don’t have topurchase a separateI/O head end. Costeffective DIO dropadapters with integralpower supplies saveyou even more money.Quantum combinationdiscrete and analog I/Omodules save addi-tional space, cost andmoney, all withoutsacrificing performance
Since Distributed I/Ouses the same networktechnology as ModbusPlus, it can coexist onthis flexible controlnetwork with program-mers, MAGELiS HMIdevices and Altivar 66variable speed drivesreducing the numberof communicationnetworks required fora system.
Momentum I/O furtherreduces the installedcost of I/O by combin-ing an I/O module, fieldwiring terminal andModbus Plus interfaceinto a module only twoinches deep, allowinga custom fit right nextto the control point.
