Cooperation project between Rocha Peixoto Municipal Library and Rocha Peixoto Secondary School

There has been a true support by Rocha Peixoto Municipal

Library to this school library as far as the development of

cultural, educative and technical activities are concerned.

Therefore, actions involving the whole documental circuit

have been taken as well as direct help and involvement in

activities of animation, promotion of reading

habits and users' formation.

In addition, cooperation has also enabled the

exchange of thematic exhibitions as the one

referring to Doris Lessing, Literature Nobel

Prize 2007, and the documental exhibition

about the life and work of our school patron,

Rocha Peixoto, with the making of

a catalogue of his works presented at the

official opening of Rocha Peixoto School thLibrary on the 18 of May 2007.

This cooperation also involves guided visits

for school library course trainees from

Rocha Peixoto School to the Municipal

Library building and services, documental

funding update through offers of municipal

editions, acceptance of trainees attending

Rocha Peixoto school courses and prizes for

the school best readers.

All of these actions allow and consolidate the

creation of a local community reading

network not only by harmonize the technical

treatment but also by articulating it with

formation actions regarding the promotion of

reading habits and skills which will enable

the effective interaction between school

libraries and the municipal one, whose main goal is to form

readers.

- Training sessions on "How to make a school work", "How to

do a bibliographic research", "How to make a Curriculum

Project Summary

From 22 to 26 May Rocha Peixoto Secondary School will

host a group of some European school librarians from

Denmark (Kalundborg and Odense), Italy (Padova),

Poland (Poznan), France (Angoulême) and Spain

(Alicante), participating in a preparatory visit whose aim

is to organize the application for the Comenius

Programme – “School Libraries Across Europe”.

The project's main goal is, undoubtedly, to help students

develop reading habits, deepen their knowledge on

national and foreign authors and cultures by promoting

a wide range of activities directly integrated within the

participating school libraries.

Aware of the growing importance of school libraries

today, not only as social and cultural pillars but especially

as true paradigms of the perfect match between past and

present, between printed words and new information and

communication technologies, we do believe this kind of

partnership will be of great value both for participating

and their local communities as well.

Reading, disseminating national writers, suggesting

books, participating in reading contests and quizzes will

be, among others, a way of bridging cultural differences

and broadening the school community's view on other

European partners' way of living, thinking and

expressing.

Mission of the Public Library and the School Library

In Portugal, the creation of a public reading libraries

network, in 1986 and a school libraries network, in 1996,

has set a common challenge: to increase reading skills,

to widen reading habits and to raise literacy levels.

The missions and goals of public library and the school

library complement themselves.

The public library intends to create and strengthen the

reading habits among children from their early age, by

stimulating children and youngsters' imagination and

creativity, by supporting their individual learning and self-

formation as well, and formal education at all levels. The

school library provides learning services, books and

resources that allow all the members of the school

community to become critical thinkers and effective users

of the information in all communication media supports.

The public library is the local information centre which

promptly assures to its users the knowledge and wide

range information, provinding basic conditions for lifelong

learning and promoting inter-cultural dialogue. The

school library provides information and knowledge,

providing competence in information tecnhologies and

comunication, building foundations for lifelong learning.

Public Libraries and School Libraries: strategies and partnerships

The public libraries are nowadays spaces of pedagogical

intervention more and more assuming themselves as

important partners of school institutions and other

institutions that compose the social structure, be them

the third age support, or the formation and support for

disabled people, among others .

The school libraries, in this (in)formation society era,

should assume themselves first as Educative Resources

Centres. As such, admit a whole net of complicities

between two of the pillars that support them: cultural

animation and curricular extension.

The level of cooperation between the public library and

the educative community is propped up by the public/

school library dialectic, with goals and missions that meet

themselves looking for an ultimate end, the promotion of

a humanity conscious of its own human being condition.

The public library should be understood as full part of

a gradual process of the citizen formation in its all, the

heart of the local community. The school library should

be understood as a full part of the educative process,

heart of the educative community.

The open information systems as libraries are, be either

public, school or university, have to join efforts, to

potentialise their intervention capacity, because libraries

play an essential role as information and formation

centres.

Mission of the Public Library and the School Library

In Portugal, the creation of a public reading libraries

network, in 1986 and a school libraries network, in 1996,

has set a common challenge: to increase reading skills,

to widen reading habits and to raise literacy levels.

The missions and goals of public library and the school

library complement themselves.

The public library intends to create and strengthen the

reading habits among children from their early age, by

stimulating children and youngsters' imagination and

creativity, by supporting their individual learning and self-

formation as well, and formal education at all levels. The

school library provides learning services, books and

resources that allow all the members of the school

community to become critical thinkers and effective users

of the information in all communication media supports.

The public library is the local information centre which

promptly assures to its users the knowledge and wide

range information, provinding basic conditions for lifelong

learning and promoting inter-cultural dialogue. The

school library provides information and knowledge,

providing competence in information tecnhologies and

comunication, building foundations for lifelong learning.

Public Libraries and School Libraries: strategies and partnerships

The public libraries are nowadays spaces of pedagogical

intervention more and more assuming themselves as

important partners of school institutions and other

institutions that compose the social structure, be them

the third age support, or the formation and support for

disabled people, among others .

The school libraries, in this (in)formation society era,

should assume themselves first as Educative Resources

Centres. As such, admit a whole net of complicities

between two of the pillars that support them: cultural

animation and curricular extension.

The level of cooperation between the public library and

the educative community is propped up by the public/

school library dialectic, with goals and missions that meet

themselves looking for an ultimate end, the promotion of

a humanity conscious of its own human being condition.

The public library should be understood as full part of

a gradual process of the citizen formation in its all, the

heart of the local community. The school library should

be understood as a full part of the educative process,

heart of the educative community.

The open information systems as libraries are, be either

public, school or university, have to join efforts, to

potentialise their intervention capacity, because libraries

play an essential role as information and formation

centres.
