Our Chosen 2 Practitioners• The Creative • The Immitator

Saul Bass

Saul Bass

•Born in the Bronx•1920-1996•Graphic designer•Film maker•Best known for his film poster design and his motion picture title sequences•Throughout his career he has worked with some of the great Hollywood film makers such as; Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick.

• Saul Bass often used geometric designs using angular shapes which made it easy to notice a Saul Bass piece of design

•His unique style of designing made his work original and different to other movie poster design at the time.

What makes Saul Bass creative?• Before Bass opening credits were seen to be like the beginning of a

book• He saw the opportunity to be creative and produce something new• ‘Generative’ thinking lead Bass to see an answer rather than the

answer• Bass made title sequences part of the film rather than just opening

credits, creating something new and original that people had never seen before

• The freshness and originality of his sequences made people interested in the title sequence rather than it being something you could miss

its a mad mad mad mad world - Saul Bass

How has he influenced today?• The work of Bass has influenced the way title sequences

have been created by giving a chance to set a mood for the film before the scene has even begun.

• Bass ended the term ‘Opening credits’ and replaced it with the term ‘Title sequence’

• Without the creativity of Bass and his designs we could still be using the old method of opening credits today and we would not have title sequences like we see in films such as James Bond
