In order for students to start writing compositions,
they must have some basicknowledge about the
“building blocks” that make up
a sentence……
Every sentence
have a
subject and a
predicate.
Basically, the subject contains a noun or a pronoun…..

..and the predicate, (the action) a verb and possibly an object.
run
catch
slide
jump
person
place
thing
can be action verbs…
or linking verbs….
In this case, the noun is beinglinked to an adjective
John is happy
noun Linkingverb adjective
An object is a nounthat received the action
of the verb…..
John plays the violin.
noun verb object
Basic simple sentencesare created by using the
noun, verb, object format.
noun verb object
Once students have mastered this
formula, they can begin to make their
sentencesmore interesting…
Now students are ready to start using descriptive
words to talk about the nouns and the verbs
adjectives adverbs

The cat ate the fish. The famished cat hungrily
ate the delicious fish.
*Do not use the same adjective more than once in a short story and especially in one sentence!
The overweight catgreedily ate the tasty fish.
Consistency is important whentelling a story.
A simple sentence has a subject and a predicate. They are short, choppy sentences that can be boring to read.
My name is Mary. I live in Aberdeen.I go to CNIS. I enjoy swimming and jogging. My favorite subject is art. I am not good at art.
A compound sentence has 2 independent clauses (simple sentences)joined together by a conjunction (and, or, but, yet)
My name is Mary, and I live in Aberdeen. At CDNIS, my favorite subject is art, yet I am not very good at it.Not only do I enjoy swimming, but I also love jogging.
…is the key to creative writing.
Sentences must be organizedin order to make our story pleasurable
to read. They should be put intoparagraphs with only one main idea.
Each paragraph should contain…
Topic sentences Supporting sentences
Concluding sentences
This sentence is usually the first sentence ofa paragraph and contains a generalstatement without details or facts
These are the sentences that have the facts and supporting information of thetopic sentence
These sentences are at the end of the paragraph and summarize and restate the main idea of the paragraph

Cats love eating! They are not very particular about the type of food they eat but tend to prefer fish and rice. One thing is certain though, they want to be fed at regular meal times. Cats always know when it is time to eat and will pester their owners relentlessly for their specially prepared fish and rice.
Although cats are considered very clean animals, they still need to be groomed by their owners. Cats can be bathed in warm soapy water once a week in order to keep their fur shiny and bug-free. Once dry, the cat’s fur can then be brushed with a metal pet brush to remove tangles. Most cats will try to escape having a bath but totally enjoy the brushing they receive afterwards!
