TheNextRTP

Metrolinx is currently in the process of updating the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). The Draft Plan (2041) outlines how governments and transit agencies can work together to continue building an integrated transportation system to support a high quality of life, a prosperous and competitive economy, and a protected environment in our region. As the provincial agency mandated with improving the coordination and integration of all modes of transportation in the GTHA, Metrolinx has developed the Draft Plan for review in consultation with partners, stakeholders and the public.

Track Installation: Welding

• Rails will be supplied to the EMSF site in short length between 18 to 24 meters. • The welded rails will be joined by one of the following methods:

• Thermite • Flashbutt

Welding: Thermite Process

• This process consists of igniting a mix of high energy materials that produce a metallic slag that is poured between the working pieces of metal to form a join.

Welding: Flashbutt Process

• Flash butt welding with a portable welding machine pulls the rail together with large copper electrodes to transmit the current to the rail

• The rail is heated at high temperature to a point the ends get extremely hot and very soft and pliable
