CUTTING TOOL MATERIALPresented by : Vipul Patil (10-732)

To produce quality parts, a cutting tool must

have three characteristics:

Wear resistance — having acceptable tool life

before needing to be replaced.

Hardness — hardness and strength at high

temperatures.

Toughness — toughness, so that tools don’t chip or

fracture.

Unstable

Very Inexpensive

Extremely Sensitive to heat

Considered obsolete today

Sharp cutting edge possible

Unstable

Inexpensive

Retain hardness at moderate temperature

Most common material tool used today

Sharp cutting edges possible

Stable

Moderately expensive

High resistance to abrasion

Sharp edges generally no recommended

Stable

Expensive

Coated with one or more thin layer of wear

resistance material – life increased by 5 times

Best applied at high cutting speed

Stable

Very Expensive

The hardest substance known to date

It is used where abrasive materials would wear

anything else

Extremely fragile

Sharp edges generally not recommended
