Bicycle masterplan - implementation

Contraflow cycling and cycling streets

• Munich has got 20 bicycle streets in which cyclists have right of way

• Requirement: Bike must be dominant traffic

• Urban districts can make suggestions administration checks qualification

• Very simple and effective measure

• 290 oneway-streets are opened for contraflow cycling (41%)

• Goal is to open 50% (350) until 2015

• Important and safe measure to improve the bike-network and comfort for cyclists

• 2007 - 2010: 350 km of the main cycling routes have been signposted

• 4.000 signs at about 750 junctions• Good advertisement for cycling:

– Reminds people to cycle more often– shows how short the distances are

Signposting system for cyclists

Bicycle parking

• Concept for bicycle parking• 2012: Statute about obligatory bicycle parking

facilities• More than 25.000 bicycle racks in Munich• Parking facilities/racks must be:

– easily accessible– able to lock your bikeframe directly

• Avoid damage / vandalism• Parking facilities at PT-stops, public buildings, etc.

Bicycle parking

Automatic counting points

• Seven points in the city where cyclists are counted the whole year• Numbers show the continuous increase of cyclists in Munich• Important for monitoring and evaluation of the bicycle masterplan

40% (500 km) Cycle tracks and cycle lanes

22% (260 km)parks, green areas, forests

38% (450 km )mixed traffic in calmed areas & tempo-30 zones

Cycling network

Infrastructural improvements

• Realisation of a new cycle lane bychanging one car lane into a bikelane (Maximilanstr.)

• Red colour in the junction

Infrastructural improvements

Infrastructural improvements

Realisation of the bicycle network

• The bicycle network in Munich is 1.200 km long• The planned/completed network will be 1.400 km long:

a. 500 km of main routesb. 500 km of subsidiary routesc. 400 km distribution network

Good cycling means and needs…

…broad cycleways as cyclists have very different speeds (10 – 30 km/h).…enough, easy accessible and safe parking facilities in public places.…cycling tracks with a smooth surface (safety and comfort).…possibility of direct turning in junctions with traffic lights.…a good network of well connected routes.…an attractive signposting and routing system.…professional communication and information.…to give cyclists the space they need.

Thanks a lot for your attention!
