Field Names

Entering Field Names

0 I entered all of the Field Names that were specified in the Data Item list provided on the Edexcel website

Data Types

Name of Species0 I kept the Data Type for

“Name of Species” as Text, because then this allows an unique text, in either numbers or letters, or a mixture of both

0 I changed the field size to 50 as this is the maximum amount that will be entered into this field. I changed the other properties to make sure that there would be no duplicates (e.g. Indexed Yes (No duplicates).

0 This ensures that each piece of data entered into this field will be individual.

0 The primary key in this field also ensures that each entry is unique.

Group

0 I entered a Lookup Wizard so that the options specified in the Data Item sheet would come up as options when entering data into the database

0 I entered a Validation Rule so that only the values listed in the Validation rule (the same as in the drop down box) can be entered; I also changed my Validation text (the error message that appears when another value is entered).

0 I also changed the Field Size to 18, as this is the maximum characters in any of the options in the drop down list.

Location

0 I kept the Data Type for “Name of Species” as Text, because then this allows an unique text, in either numbers or letters, or a mixture of both

0 I changed the field size to 30 as this is the maximum amount that will be entered into this field, as no location in the world is more than 30 characters

Status

0 I entered a Lookup Wizard so that the options specified in the Data Item sheet would come up as options when entering data into the database

0 I entered a Validation Rule so that only the values listed in the Validation rule (the same as in the drop down box) can be entered; I also changed my Validation text (the error message that appears when another value is entered).

0 I also changed the Field Size to 4, as this is the maximum characters in any of the options in the drop down list.

Threat

0 I entered a Lookup Wizard so that the options specified in the Data Item sheet would come up as options when entering data into the database

0 I entered a Validation Rule so that only the values listed in the Validation rule (the same as in the drop down box) can be entered; I also changed my Validation text (the error message that appears when another value is entered).

0 I also changed the Field Size to 1, as this is the maximum characters in any of the options in the drop down list.

Weblink

0 I changed the Data Type for Weblink to “Hyperlink” as this allows me to enter the weblink into the field and then be able to click it and instantly access the webpage

Adoption Cost

0 I changed the Data Type to “Currency” as in this field, prices will be entered, and this Data Type allows me to enter a price

0 I changed the decimal places to 2 as this is the number of decimal places in the UK currency

Importing Data

Take One

0 The first time I imported my data, not all of the records were imported. I only managed to import 104 out of 173 records. This means that I had to go back and change something to correct this.

I changed the field size from 4 to 6, when I realised my mistake

Take Two0 I removed

“Like” from all of my Validation Rules to ensure that my Validation Rules would work properly

Take Three

0 I changed the spelling of “Amphibian” in my Validation Rule, and this meant that all of the data was imported successfully, resulting in 173 records

Data Entry Form

Data Entry Form0 I created a data

entry form where data can be viewed and new data can be entered, and also can be easily navigated, using the buttons provided

Entering New Records

Baboon0 I researched the baboon and added

it into my database as a new record

0 This is the website that I used to gain my information from

0 This is the information I used to tell me that they were “Endangered” and that the threat was “Humans”

White Rhinoceros0 I researched the white rhinoceros and

added it into my database as a new record

0 This is the website that I used to gain my information from

0 This is the information I used to tell me that they were “Endangered” and that the threat was “Humans”

Arctic Fox0 I researched Arctic Fox and added into my

database as a new record
