TheBuddyWalkwilltakeplaceonSunday,October3rdatColumbusCrewStadium.The1-milewalkwillbeginat10a.m.Registrationwillbeginat9a.m.

The Buddy Walk is sponsored by the Down SyndromeAssociation of Central Ohio (DSACO) in order to promoteacceptance and inclusion of persons with Down syndrome.DSACOhopestoraise$200,000throughthewalkthisyear.

Afterthewalk,awiderangeofentertainmentwillbeavailable,includingaliveband,zooanimals,clowns,teammascotsandface-painting.

“ThisisafunwaytocelebratethemanyaccomplishmentsofindividualswithDownsyndrome,”saidFCBDDSuperintendentJedMorison.

Theadvocacygroup,CommonGround,ismeetingonThursday, September 30th, to hear presentations fromrepresentativesoftheOhioDepartmentofDevelopmentalDisabilities and the Ohio Department of Job and FamilyServices.

State budget to be discussed at Common GroundTheorganizationhasasked that their guestsdiscuss

the2011/2012statebudget.Themeetingwillalsoincludeanopenforumfordiscussion.

Themeetingwillbeheldfrom7to9p.m.atOCALI,470GlenmontAvenue.Allinterestedarewelcometoattend.

the change. Current signs will bereplacedasneeded.HamiltonCountyCommissioners approved the samechangeinthespring.

WaltWilcox,formerlyatrainingspecialistatARCIndustriesNorth, passed away July 28th. Walt joined FCBDD in 1990andworkedattheARCNorthworkshopuntilhisretirementonMarch30th.HehadpreviouslybeenatrainingspecialistandproductionmanagerfortheUnionCountyBoardofDDfortenyears.

Waltwashighlyskilledinrunningproductionjobsaswellasdevelopingstrongrelationshipswiththeindividualsheserved.He was known for his contagious laugh and his ability as astoryteller.Hecertainlywillbemissed.

OSDA conference setThe Ohio Self-Determination

Association will hold its annualconferenceattheDoubletreeHotelinWorthington on Monday, September20th and Tuesday, September 21st.Thethemewillbe“CelebratetheFireWithin.”

The conference, aimed atprofessionals,families,self-advocatesand others will feature a variety ofspeakers,includingNickScott,GlennTibbitts, Cary Grywalski and TysonGentry.

JoWarner,alongtimestaffmemberatARCIndustriesWest,retiredinJulyafter 36 years of dedicated service.Jo started her career in September,1974atNortheastSchool,whichwasstillunderconstructionatthattime.

Jo’soriginalclassofstudentswereall the inspiration needed to pursuethefieldasalifelongcareer.

“They welcomed me with openheartsandappreciatedthelittletingsthatIdidwiththem.”

GraystoneConsulting,adivisionofMorganStanleySmithBarney,wasthemajorcorporatesponsorofanddrivingforcebehindtheGolfOutingtobenefitFCBDDSpecialOlympics.Severalathleteswerespecialguestsattheevent,whichwasheldonJune21statLittleTurtleCountryClub.Over$50,000wasraised.

“WeareverygratefultoalloursupportersandespeciallyGraystoneforitscontinued,outstandingleadershipinthisendeavor,”saidRyanPhillips,DirectorofFCBDD’sSpecialOlympicsprogram.

Starting this summer, the ServiceCoordination Department beganpartnering with Rumpke Recyclingon recycling paper, paperboard,cardboard,plasticbottles,glassbottlesandjars,aswellasaluminumandsteelcans. Each month the departmentdivertsnearly750poundsofrecyclablematerials.

Since these materials aren’t goingto landfills, where are they going?According to the Rumpke website,plastic drinking bottles are usedto make cleaning product bottles,

carpets,fabricandinsulationforwinterjackets. Opaque plastic bottles areused tomakedetergentbottles, trashbins, park benches, picnic tables andthe base caps for plastic soft drinkbottles. Glass isusedtomakearawmaterialfortheproductionoffiberglassinsulation. Steel cans are melted foruseinappliancesandcars.

Aluminum cans are especiallyimportanttorecycleastheycontainarawmaterialcalledbauxite. SuppliesofbauxitehavebeendepletedinOhio,making used aluminum a particularlyvaluablerecycledmaterial.Aluminum

isrecycledintogutters,siding,ormoresoftdrinkcans.

Paper is sorted by Rumpke andrecycledintosimilartypesofpaper.Forexample, paperboard and cardboardcan be made into cardboard boxes,while office paper can be turned intomoreofficepaper.

Shreddedpaperisrecycledtoo.InJuly,1,666poundsofshreddedpaperwascollected,compressedandbaledtomakeavarietyofpaperproducts.

Aplaybarn is goinguponthe Early Childhood OutdoorLearning Environment onJohnstownRoad.Thestructurewasmadepossiblebyagrantawarded by the ColumbusFoundation, as well as othergrantsanddonations.

The barn will offeropportunities to challenge themotorabilitiesand interestsofthechildren.

Completionisscheduledforearlyfallwhenaribboncuttingand“barnraising”eventwillbeheld.
