Parallelism Parallelism means using the same pattern of

words to show different ideas have the same level of importance.

Occurs at the word, phrase, or clause level. Usually uses coordinating conjunctions such as

"and" or "or."

Parallel Examples  Marwan likes to hike, to swim, and to ride a

bicycle.ORMarwan likes to hike, swim, and ride a bicycle.

More Examples Not Parallel: 

The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurately, and in a detailed manner.

Parallel: The production manager was asked to write his report quickly, accurately, and thoroughly.

When to use Adjectives vs. Adverbs Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives and other adverbs –

typically end in “-ly” Examples: Quickly, Angrily, Abnormally

“I ate spaghetti abnormally.” Adjectives describe nouns –

I ate rancid spaghetti. Well is adverb, Good is adjective.

You talk well. You look good. When comparing two terms use an adverb that ends in –er.

Of Lebron James and Kevin Durant, I like Lebron better. When comparing multiple things use an adverb that ends in

est. Of Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant, I like

Lebron best.

Tip: Make sure you match the underlined term to what it is describing. What is careful here?

Example: Fix the following sentenceThe applicants for low-interest loans

hoped to buy decent built houses for their families.

Explanation: built is an adjective, decent describes that adjective, therefore decent is an adverb and needs an -ly.
