Dean’s Corner Greetings Berkeleyites,
I hope you had a lovely weekend. It was rather warm, but I absolutely
loved it! Today I want to point your attention to a new section in the
Dean’s Corner ...‘Service Corner’. Many of you are doing outstanding
work in the Yale and New Haven Community and I want to highlight
your efforts and bring awareness to these wonderful projects and en-
deavors. I am certain others will want to get involved, including me! I
truly believe that service is not just for those we are serving but is one
of the greatest gifts we give to ourselves. In that spirit, I have partnered
with Hunger Heroes to bring a small group of willing and eager service
minded Berkeley students to serve food at the United Church Parish
House soup kitchen this Saturday from 4:30-6:30pm. Please sign up
here to join me if you are available. Please keep in mind that space is
limited, so spots will go to the first to sign up but do not sign up unless
you are committed to attending. We will do this along with other BK
service opportunities again, so don’t worry if it doesn’t work out this
time around.
Cheers to a great week!
All the best,
Dean Miller

“I haven’t failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
John Lee (BK 18’) is doing great on Mondays 4-5pm and Fridays from 3:45-4:45pm tutoring chess at New Haven Pub-lic Library. Feel free to join him anytime! John Lee says:
“It's also a way to connect to the New Haven community and get to know the great people who live in this city--
the children, their parents, even their grandparents. One of my [secretly] favorite students Amane, a 9 year old Japanese American girl, once told me, "Winning and losing are little things in life." I asked her to elaborate and even got her to sort out a list of some 50 'things' as big or little. I was surprised when she put "Chess" under the category of 'little things.' ..But Amane didn't disappoint. I saw her put 'Strangers', 'Making new friends', 'Learning', 'Having a good mind', 'Laughter', 'Making eye contact', 'Listening to other people's stories', and 'Playing' under the category of 'big things'--those being some of the big things that have made chess club so big to me.”
DON’T FORGET!
