Discuss this question with your table groups!

Hang the Question Poster on the board.

Deforestation: Pass out a copy of the “Deforestation Fact Cards” and “Sorting Mat” to each set of partners.

Ask students to think about which facts support which answer to the question: “Is deforestation an issue kids should worry about?”

Sort the facts cards into the categories they think are best-fitting.

Explain why you thought certain facts supported a certain opinion. Share out observations of how the facts were sorted. Here are some key points to bring out: Not every fact is viewed in the same way.

Certain facts might strongly support one opinion, while other facts might be difficult to figure out how it could support either opinion.

Some facts may be able to support both opinions, depending on the explanation (or “rationale”) that goes with it.
