Spatial planning: context and principles

‘spatial planning goes beyond traditional land use planning to bring together and integrate policies for the development and use of land with other policies and programmes which influence the nature of places and how they function’

Why do I need to know about spatial planning?

you are responsible for developing and delivering the long term vision for your area.

you need to work with partners to deliver the services and development necessary to achieve these long term ambitions

you need to meet local needs and ambitions making best use of resources.

Local government role : place shaping?

– Set out in the Lyons Report in March 2007

– Integrating all approaches together

– Public sector working together– Targeting a range of issues e.g.

worklessness, anti-social behaviour, housing, education

– Seeking improved outcomes for places and communities
