DENMARK TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY

UTM-DTU (Technical University of Denmark)

International Summer Course

BACKGROUND

Since 1998, intensive joint courses have been offered under the MUCED- DUCED cooperation between Malaysian and Danish universities.

Joint courses were part of an introduction for Danish students to more long-term projects in host countries under the Traineeships and Field Studies programme. These intensive courses have been an effective method for promoting intercultural development, applying new approaches to teaching and learning, exploring new areas of academic study and developing collaboration with stakeholders outside the universities.

BACKGROUND cont….

International Summer Course on Sustainable Production offer by UTM and Denmark Technical of University (DTU) from 7th - 25th June 2009 and 7th -25th June 2010. Organized by Institute of Environmental & Water Resources Management (IPASA), School of Graduate Studies (SPS) and International Student Centre (ISC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Conducted within a new industrial growth area in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia-Iskandar Development Region (IDR) - which encompasses an area about 3 times the size of neighbouring Singapore.

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER COURSE 2009 & 2010

This course serves as one of UTM’s elective courses for postgraduate students as well as a short course (one week) for the industrial participants.

UTM-DTU INTERNATIONAL SUMMER 2010

The International Summer Course on Sustainable Production 2010 will provide an integrated and holistic approach to sustainable production. It can serve as a platform for subsequent more specialised studies e.g. on life cycle assessment (LCA) tools, as well as a framework for advanced studies, e.g. on industrial ecology.

The course will cover different aspects of sustainable production – from definition and discussion of the general concept of sustainability to an introduction of some specific tools to improve eco-efficiency of production. The target of Eco-efficiency improvement can be employed at several system levels of intervention in the demand-supply chain.

Programme Objective

To promote intercultural development To build capacities regarding

sustainability and the related tools To apply new approaches to teaching and

learning techniques, interdisciplinary and problem-oriented approaches

To explore new areas of academic study To develop collaboration with

stakeholders outside the universities

Programme Highlights

Arne Wangel is Associate Professor at DTU Management. He has years of experience in planning and evaluation methodologies for international technology and knowledge transfers and in particular for capacity development in environment in Asian countries. He has served as a consultant to the Danish Development Agency (DANIDA), and as a coordinator in twinning projects with universities in Malaysia. He has done research on inter-cultural management and models of management-labour relations. The objective of his current research is to strategize options to support capacity development with companies and institutions in developing countries with regard to the adoption of LFA tools, and to encourage anticipatory approaches for compliance with environmental standards in global value chains.

DISTINGUISHED INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS

Dr. Stig Irving Olsen is a biologist with 17 years of experience in environmental science. The key areas of his work have been eco-toxicological and toxicological assessments of chemical substances and life cycle assessment (LCA). Dr. Olsen has, among other assignments, worked on eco-toxicological and toxicological evaluation of pesticides, elaboration of European-classification proposals for substances, toxicological evaluation of plastic materials, and methodological development of toxicological and ecotoxicological assessments in LCA where comparative evaluation are important. In this connection he was a co-chairman of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe working group on assessment of toxicological impacts in LCA.

DISTINGUISHED INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS

Dr. Ralph K. Rosenbaum is Associate Professor at DTU Management Engineering. His main expertises are in methodological development and improvement of quantitative environmental system analysis and sustainable development tools such as life cycle analysis (LCA) and comparative risk assessment as well as teaching and supervising engineering students from undergraduate to Ph.D level and professional engineers/scientists in continuing education in ecodesign, environmental systems analysis and modellling, LCA and sustainable development in general. Contributing to the establishment of global recommended practice and guidance on LCA, he is member (partly chairman) of several expert groups and task forces of the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative as well as advisory groups of the society of Environmental Taxicology and Chemistry (SETAC).

Dr. Zaini Ujang is a professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He is well known as a professional environmental engineer, academic leader, environmentalist and environmental regulator. Professor Zaini has been regarded as a “Malaysian Water Icon” and introduced as an “environmental ideologue”.
