Butte are only 25 miles apart over thejagged Elk Range, but are over 200miles apart by road – and increasinglydistant in their selling points, accordingto Chris Kopf, Crested Butte expert forColdwell Banker Previews. By appoint-ment, he can show you a home on 35acres overlooking the town’s namesakeski peak; with features that would workfor buyers in either place, but at way,way below Glitter Gulch prices.
“You hear people say Crested Butteis what Aspen was 20 years ago,” saysKopf. In 1999 during a ski trip fromDallas he impulsively joined his brotherin making a second-home purchasehere, had a hard time explaining it tohis wife; but ended moving the familyhere five years ago. “It’s a special place,”
he adds. “A lot of people who live hererepresent an affluent demographic, butCrested Butte has a genuine characterto it; it’s less pretentious.”
It’s also a rising star real-estatewise, Kopf tells his clients in hismarket report (ask for it at ChrisKopf@BigHornRealty.com). After a dip in salesduring 2012, the ski town saw its recov-ery continue in 2013 to post 335 sales, over twice the total in 2008, with dollarvolume up considerably. Much of thegood news, he adds, is in the million-dollar-plus end of the market – 27 soldin 2013.
He’ll show you (by appointment)152 Evergreen Drive, a mile-and-a-halfwest of town, with five bedrooms and5-½ baths. “It’s a beautiful mountainhome, a piece of art, actually,” Kopfadds. The price is $3.9 million. Whatwould it go for over in Aspen? “It’sten or 15 million dollars,” he opines.Kopf, who knows first-hand how fardistant Aspen is by skiing the distanceduring the annual ‘Elk Mountain GrandTraverse,’ says the trip up from Denveris around four hours, and you shouldinclude a local dining stop, maybeMaxwell’s, Wooden Nickel, Marchitelli’sor Bacchanale. With listings at a widerange of prices including a riverfrontproperty on the Taylor River, Kopf is onthe web at ChrisKopf.com.
