was a great
day to go to the golf course, particularly if it was The
Golf Club of Amelia Island adjacent to the Ritz-
Carlton on Amelia Island, Florida. Avid golfers may
have been disappointed, but car lovers were ec-
static, because the 10th and 18
th fairways were cov-
ered with the cars of the 16th Annual Amelia Island
Concours d‘Elegance. They were quite a sight to
see. A great variety of cars were displayed - old and
new, big and little, foreign and domestic and every-
thing in between. Every car was special and beauti-
fully displayed on the golf course with an information

placard in front of each car with its identification and
history. The weekend also included auctions, panel
discussions (including a panel on Women of Racing)
and a long list of special presentations and events
on the Friday and Saturday preceding the Concours.
Florida State fans would have loved the 1925 Rolls
Royce done in garnet and gold, or if they were look-
ing for something smaller the 1968 Porsche 911
race car in garnet with a gold racing stripe would
have done nicely. Porsches of several ilk‘s were
scattered around the fairways. We saw Steve
McQueen‘s grey 911, 917 racers, various Porsche
Turbo racers and several 356‘s including a Speed-
ster restored at local restoration specialist and North
Florida Region supporter, GK Restorations.
If you go next year here are some tips. You walk a
lot - wear comfortable walking shoes. Keep your
eyes on the weather including the temperature. It
started cool in the morning and quickly warmed up.
Parking was provided at the Airport with shuttle ser-
vice to the event locale for $10. You could also park
along the road leading to the Ritz-Carlton at no
charge, but this involved a long walk (up to a mile
each way) in addition to walking at the site. Also
many areas were marked ―NO PARKING‖ particu-
larly as you got closer to the Ritz-Carlton.
Admission to the Concours was $45 and included a
very nice program and a neck lanyard holder for
your admission ticket. Food venders were available,
but long lines developed at lunchtime. Take your
camera. It did not seem as crowded as the pictures
indicate, but there were lots of folks there and the
crowd grows as the day goes on and begins to de-
cline about 3:00 PM or so.
Dress ran the gamut. Many men wore blazers and
ties and women elegant outdoor attire. I suspect a
lot of these folks had cars entered. Others wore
shorts and golf shirts or t-shirts. You can arrive at
Amelia around 9:00 or 10:00 A.M. and leave in the
late afternoon and see almost everything. In addi-
tion to cars on display, vendors of insurance, maga-
zines, cars, watches and other car related items

played - old and new, big and lit-
tle, foreign and domestic and eve-

were on site. Many passed out samples or memen-
tos of their wares, including bags to carry stuff. I
picked up seven or eight heavy sample magazines
on the way in—including DuPont Registry and
Sports Car Market. I got a nice bag from Haggerty
Classic Car Insurance to carry them in. I then car-
ried about 15 pounds of stuff for the rest of the day.
You can get the stuff on the way out, but you run the
risk of the vendors running short of samples and you
wouldn‘t want to miss out due to that. As it is every
year, it was a great show for the car enthusiast
and well worth attending!
Alan reports that ”It did not seem as crowded as the pictures indicate…”. Hmmm… Alan has apparently created a new kind of math!

Loud music,
loud cars, too much alcohol and tobacco. Nonstop
for 72 hours. Boy, I wish I was younger so I could
enjoy this... I learned a few things from Sebring this
year. One is I am not as young as I thought I was.
Two is thank goodness for the PCNA Porsche Hos-
pitality Tent and the Taj Maholics. Both offered a
respite from the onslaught of too much everything.
My suggestion if you decide to go to Sebring is be
sure to take an RV, or get a hotel nearby. Camping
for 3 days at Sebring is for the kids. The race itself
was interesting if you could follow it. That is hard to
do at Sebring. BMW swept GT. Peugeot won LMP1.
There were interesting cars there, including the
2011 Panoz GT, it looks like a 13 year old designed
a new Bat Mobile.

The new Ferrari 458 Italia GT is just too beautiful to
believe, especially with the Italian super models
draped over them before the race. Porsche had a
fast GT3 RSR Flying Lizard car but once again it
could not stay out of trouble on the track. So that is it
for Sebring 2011. Next Race unsure, maybe Road
Atlanta in the fall.

made another one of our
trips to Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville, this time for
their annual swap meet, car show and concours.
Neither one of us had been to a Brumos swap meet
before, and we were looking forward to it. Earlier
this year we made the trip in a heavy rainstorm to
see the unveiling of the new #59 911 GT3 race car.
This time we had perfect weather making for a much
easier drive.
By the time we arrived the parking lot out back was
just about filled with a nice cross selection of Por-
sches. As we pulled into the lot I was asked if I was
showing my car in the concours. Although the car
had left the showroom just a couple of months ago, I
had no interest in going through the stress and grief
of a concours. so I passed.
We started by checking out the venders set up along
one side of the property. This was the one disap-
pointing part of the day, at least to me. There were
only 8-10 venders, and they didn‘t really have very
much in the way of inventory.
Inside the workshop the crew for the #59 race car
had set up the race car along side a production
model GT3 for a demonstration of the differences
and similarities. The crew chief claimed the race car
was approx. 70 per cent original production car, and
then showed where they made changes. Some
things were obvious; the fuel tank in the front, the
suspension and wheels, and the interior. Some not
so obvious, like the built in jack system for quick pit
stops, the light weight panels, the exhaust system,
and the transmission.
They then put both cars up on the lifts and showed
us the differences underneath. The concours had
about 15 cars and they looked great. My favorite
was a silver 356 Roadster that was a complete rust

bucket to start with, and was turned into a show
stopper. See photo. There was also a beautiful red
Boxster Spyder and a white 356. Because we had to
get back to Tallahassee, we did not stay around for
the results of the concours to be announced. After
enjoying a lunch put on by a local Boy Scouts of
America troop, we put the top down and hit the
road for home.
A shot of the vendor area for the swap meet portion of the gath-
ering. Unfortunately, the pickings this year were rather slim.
The concours had several extremely nice cars entered, includ-
ing this spiffy 911 Turbo from days gone by.

Saturday May 7th 2011
It’s the time of year when Tom & Evelyn pull
out the stops and host this wonderful event at
their home in Ochlockonee Bay, FL. If you’ve
been to one of these in the past you know it
will be GREAT!
With a large attendance, you can see many
different Porsches on display and catch up
with friends both old
and new! It’s important to RSVP to Tom &
Evelyn by May the 4th at (850) 508-6107 or
vlasakte@earthlink.net to let them know
you’re coming. We hope to see you there!

the Student Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) at the FAMU/FSU En-
gineering School held its First Annual Car Show.
Three North Florida Region Members participated in
the show and one came away with the People‘s
Choice Award. See the May/June 2010 Der Por-
sche Brief for the review of that show, which fea-
tured a very nice 1937 Rolls Royce Limousine
driven to the show from Lake City by its owner.
The Student SAE holds these shows as a fund
raiser for various student projects throughout the
year. The show has a modest $5 entry fee if you
want to be included in the judging, but you can show
up and just show off your car, motorcycle or other
automotive endeavor. This year the event was held
at the Engineering School in Tallahassee on the
same weekend as the Sebring 12 Hour Race, so the
March 19, 2011 Show was missing those sports car
enthusiasts who attended the race. Never-the-less
some exciting automotive machinery was on display.
The tuner crowd of young engineering students was
out in force with meticulously tuned and decorated
Honda‘s, Pontiacs and pickup trucks.
Among the most innovative items on display were
the student projects including a pretty slick looking
silver formula looking race car. Also present was a
dune buggy type car being prepared for a student
competition in which the car will have to swim as
well as run an off road course. A three wheeled stu-
dent car was also displayed.
Among the automotive entries competing for tro-
phies was an electric motorcycle which was amaz-
ing to see run, but astounded with its complete si-

lence while in motion. It also weighed less than the
original even with the batteries on board. A young
fellow from Amelia Island brought a great looking
tuned to the ultimate Honda S-2000 which tied for
best in show with a North Florida Region member‘s
Porsche 356. The 356 also won the Best Classic
Award. Danny Fuch‘s 2011 Porsche 911 won many
oohs and aahs and looked beautiful on display.
North Florida Region members have supported this
worthy cause since its inception. Bring your car to
next year‘s show and help support the student SAE
and keep the Region‘s streak alive of taking home
at least one trophy every year!

A LOOK BACK
In the spring of 2004 I had an extra $100.00 just
burning a hole in my pocket and besides my ac-
countant said I needed to donate more to charity to
reduce our tax burden. So – I bought a ticket from
the American Cancer Society (ACS) for a raffle, the
prize, a new Porsche 911 Cabriolet. After putting
the ticket on the refrigerator door with a magnet we
promptly forgot about it.
I seem to remember that it was in late August that I
received a phone call from a lady named Carol in
my office. She told me that my ticket was selected
in the drawing and what did I think about winning the
Porsche. I told her I was busy and it was a good
joke by one of my friends in the office. But she per-
sisted and sure enough I was the winner of the
$84,000 car.
Soon a package of paperwork arrived from the ACS
including tax forms and instructions for claiming the
car. We would have to go to Hoffman Porsche in
Hartford, Conn. to get the car. But first the IRS re-
quired that we pay a projected tax on the winning of
$21,000, up front, no credit cards accepted. Luckily
our saving could ante up the funds.
Page 18

Now we had the question, do we really want a new
911 Cab? We already had two Porsches and the
new one would become a grocery-getter. No, we
had been thinking about trading in our 10 year old
25ft motor home from something newer. What
should we do? After checking with Hoffman we
found that we would get the car with the German
Certificate of Origin, it had not been registered in the
US as of yet.
We ran an advertisement in the Tampa Tribune and
the Atlanta Constitution / Journal for the car as new,
never titled. In two days we were contacted by an
exotic car dealer in New Jersey who had a customer
that wanted a new Porsche 911 Cab. Problem was
the dealer did not sell Porsche. We made a deal,
cash for the car in Conn. and the dealer would send
a flat bed up to get it. Evelyn and I still had to go to
Connecticut to do the paperwork and take posses-
sion of the keys.
We left after work on Friday and did a marathon
drive, getting to Hartford about 4:00 pm Saturday.
It was fall and the colors in New England were at
their prime and we couldn‘t get the car until Monday
morning, so we went exploring, going to colonial
towns with covered bridges, hiking a short section of
the Appalachian Trail, and visiting the Lime Rock
Race Track.
Monday morning we did the paperwork on the car,
got the keys and were given permission to park it in
the back service lot for the dealership. We took a
ride around the block just to see how it ran and
locked it up. The next day found us in Perth Amboy,
NJ. As promised the dealer had certified funds and
we handed over the keys and COO. After another
marathon drive home, we started to look for an RV.
And that‘s the rest of the story.
RACE REPORTS
Since my last report, we have participated in 5
races, three for me and two for Evelyn.
There was a national race at Savannah‘s Roebling
Road, where we competed with the Porsche. Over
the winter we did some aero work, changing the pick
-up and ducting for the front oil cooler, modified the
front splitter to ―winglets‖, moved the battery, and
added a carbon fiber Cup style wing on the rear.
The Roebling race was the first chance to try out the
handling with the new package. The car ran well,
was faster than last year with the reduced weight on
the rear (about 40#). A puncture in the right rear tire
caused some concern, several cars including ours
were picking up debris. There were a number of
cup cars from up north racing out of division so the
best we could finish was a 5th.
The next two outings were back to back double race
weekends. Road Atlanta hosted a double national
for the Porsche in March, and the very next week-
end there was a double regional at Carolina Mo-
torsports Park (CMP) for Evelyn. With gas costs
starting to become a concern we decided to attend
both races in the motor home and not return to Flor-
ida between events.
The Road Atlanta weekend included beautiful
weather and a bevy of cars in my GT2 class. The
racing was hotly contested and included a Spec
Miata driver crashing hard at the bridge and being
air evacuated to an Atlanta hospital (he was OK).

Fortunately there was no such drama during my two
races, 7th on Saturday and 6
th on Sunday. After
loading up we left the track and made the short drive
to Helen, GA to stay the week at Unicoi State Park.
Hiking, campfires, and reading novels while the
spring leaves and flowers began to bud out made for
a nice respite. We left on Friday morning for the 4
hour drive to Kershaw, SC where CMP is located.
If the weather was ideal at Road Atlanta, it was less
than ideal at CMP. Evelyn was able to get a dry
practice/qualifying session on Saturday morning but
a cold front was coming through and misting rain
and 41 degrees made the afternoon race a chal-
lenge. She did finish the race which is better than
some others.
Sunday dawned dismal and cool (cold?) with more
rain in the forecast. Practice was on rain tires and
Evelyn was having trouble keeping the car from
spinning (I think we counted six spins). The last
spin resulted in the engine not wanting to restart so
she needed a flat tow back to the paddock. Unfortu-
nately, the track had a new wrecker driver who had
not been trained in towing open cars. The rules call
for the driver to have the tow strap wrapped around
the lower section of the roll cage and maintain con-
trol of the strap, letting go if necessary.
This driver latched the strap around the top of the
cage and wouldn‘t listen to Evelyn that she wanted
control. Luckily, the rules also say that when being
towed the driver will have all safety gear and belts
on. When the tow driver brought the car into the pits
he made a sharp turn to the paddock, the tow strap
slid to the left front corner of the cage and promptly
flipped the car. He wasn‘t watching his mirrors so
he also dragged the car several feet on its side.
This happened immediately next to the Steward‘s
tower and within seconds there were many helping
hands. Evelyn wasn‘t hurt, all the safety gear kept
her inside the cage, She was just a little ungainly
getting out when her foot got stuck under the pedals.
While she when to the medics for a check out we
turned the car back on its wheels and pushed it to
our paddock to assess repairs. After checking the
body work and fluids, we restarted the car and de-
termined that it was race worthy. The left side body
look like hell but the car still ran.
Evelyn went out in a light rain and ran a conserva-
tive race. The rest of the story? After returning to
Tallahassee we disassembled most of the car to
check for hidden damages. We found out why the
car wouldn‘t handle. The welds on the left front
frame member where the sway bar attached were
broken loose. No front sway bar – massive over
steer. The frame was repaired, and strengthened by
Tallahassee Welding, and on Thursday (4/20) we
finished painting the left side. Now that side looks
better than the rest of the car.
On April 30 - May 1st weekend we will be running a
double regional at Roebling. Evelyn is going to test
the day before the race weekend in the Lynx FV
(with a new Noble motor) and I will run the FV in the
race while she runs her Sprite. We are looking for-
ward to having Charlie Stratton join us in our pad-
dock with his ITR class 911.
With gas prices rising we are still assessing taking
both Formula Vees up north to run Mid-Ohio, Nel-
son Ledges and BeaveRun in July.

Hey! Check THIS Out...
If you know of an interesting Porsche oriented book,
magazine article, news happening or web-link, let us
know about it and we‗ll mention it here.
From the President: In late March of 2011, the
PCANFR General Membership voted to accept the
Region‘s Amended Bylaws. Look for these to be
readily accessible from the website‘s ‘About Us‘
page in the near future. A big Thank You goes out to
everyone that took the time to revise and review the
document and vote!
Also know that Zone 12‘s Suncoast Region is about
to celebrate their 50th Anniversary as a PCA Region
and You are invited! See the promo on page 17 for
contact information. To receive special room rates
and other benefits make sure you register by May
the 10th. Our region is also about to witness a mile-
stone in our 40th Anniversary and we‘ve come up
with a plan for a fun weekend. Stay tuned for details.
From Tom Johnson: My wife Adrianne, who many
of you have met, lost her mother recently after an
incredibly tough battle with brain cancer that lasted
for over 3 years. Some of you knew Cheryl Davis,
and I wouldn‘t be surprised if more of you than I real-
ized had met ―Momma D‖, as she was so outgoing
and never met a stranger. I wanted to pass on some
information about what we‘re doing to honor her.
The American Brain Tumor Association is holding a
5k run/walk in Chicago on May 14th and many of
Cheryl‘s loved ones are participating. Adrianne and I
moved to Tallahassee to help her father care for
Cheryl, and I can tell you in no uncertain terms that
no family should have to go through such an ordeal.
With Cheryl as our inspiration we‘re trying to do our
small part to prevent future families from going
through the same struggle. If you‘re interested in
helping, contact me at tjohnson@CrownCars.com
and I‘ll send you information on how you can help
put ―Momma D‘s Crew‖ over the top in the 5K event!
Thanks so much everybody, and stay well. I‘ll see
you soon!
From the Editor: Many of you are aware that the
2011 Porsche Parade in Savannah, GA is on the ho-
rizon (see the promo on page 21 if you‘re not!). This
is a great opportunity for us as it‘s essentially in our
‘backyard‘ and should make for a great vacation
given the easy trip over and the full slate of events
the organizers have planned.
What‘s fairly new to the info-mill is that registration is
now open for the 2011 Escape. See the promo (also
on page 21) for the link to the website that has been
setup specifically to serve as ‘Information Central‘ for
this year‘s Escape. The Flagstaff, AZ area is abso-
lutely stunning and many different activities are
planned so check out the site and make your plans
today!
Webmaster Needed: The region is in need of a
Webmaster so if you have the skills, drive & desire
here‘s your chance to help PCANFR in a very big
way! Contact President Danny Fuchs for details.
