DESCRIBING SOMETHING

Some words are used for describing things. They are used in accordance with the following order.

A. Determiners

Determiners are articles and other limiters (pembatas) (e.g. a, your, the five, her).

Examples: A girl Your books The car Five bags Her skirt

Observations/opinions are used to describe what is thought about a noun (e.g., pretty, expensive, delicious).

Examples: A pretty girl. An expensive dress. The delicious cake

Note: Thought : pemikiran, gagasan, ide

B. Observations / Opinions

Size is used to describe how big or small a noun is (e.g., small, big, tiny, enormous)

Examples: A small town. The big house.

C. Size

Age is used to describe how young or old a noun is (e.g., young, old, ancient, new)

Examples: Some young people An old man. The ancient story. My new shoes.

D. Age

It is used describe the form of a noun (e.g., round, square, flat)

Examples: The round table. The square field Your flat shoes

E. Shape

It is used to describe the color of a noon

(e.g. blue, pink, green).Examples: Her blue jacket The green leaves

F. Color.

It is used to describe what a noun is made of (e.g. wooden, cotton, silver, metal).

Examples: His wooden desk My cotton shirt The silver ring

G. Material

Origin is used to describe where a noun is from (e.g. American, eastern, lunar).

Examples: An American car Two Japanese motorcycles

H. Origin

It is used to describe what a noun is used for or what it does.

Examples: The running shoes My drawing pencil

I. Purpose / Qualifier

Noun is the word that is being described.

Examples: A book Ten shoes My car

J. Noun

ADJECTIVE ORDERWhen using more than one

adjective to describe a noun, place the adjectives in the following order before the noun. (Note: we usually use no more than three adjectives before a noun).

1. OpinionExamples: an exciting experience, a good movie

2. SizeExamples: a big house, a small box

3. AgeExamples: a young soldier, an old car.

4. Shape Examples: a round hat, a square room

5. Color Examples: a blue bag, a black cap.

6. OriginExamples: a Swiss watch, a Japanese car

7. MaterialExamples: a Swiss watch, a Japanese car

8. MaterialExamples: a wooden sweater, a plastic toy

9. QualifierExamples: a football player, some camping gear
