Client ProfileAbstract
The client was looking to extract vast amount of
data from unstructured sources such as text files and
excel spreadsheets, containing survey responses,
customer feedbacks, service requests and technical
notes. Although the client had traditional analytical
tools such as OBIEE, it was manual and laborious to
generate patterns and root cause analysis for
warranty and quality data. Apart from this the
business was hugely dependent on IT, which was
both expensive and time consuming.
The business needed a solution that would empower
users to perform data discovery on their own, with
minimal IT intervention. The solution needed to
have the ability to combine huge amounts of data
from unstructured and structured sources, giving
business users the flexibility to perform data discov-
ery without specific reports being developed.
The client is a power management company
providing solutions to its customers to manage
electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power efficiently,
safely and sustainably. With approximately 100,000+
employees worldwide, the client sells products to
customers in more than 175 countries.
Business Requirements

The client’s requirement was to have a solution for quick, easy and centralized access for the analysis of vast
amount of data from various structured and unstructured data sources. The solution needed to be robust and
secure, with ability for business users to extract information on their own without large involvement from IT.
The solution had to be easy-to-use and needed to have intuitive features for data discovery, including visualiza-
tions, charts such as Pareto, feeds tables and text enrichments among others. The customer also wanted the
solution to be business user-friendly, rather than IT centered so as to reduce delivery time and improve business
process.
Our proposed solution to meet the business requirements was the implementation of Oracle Endeca Informa-
tion Discovery. The implementation started with a pilot environment where all Endeca components were
installed in a sandbox and applications were developed to evaluate Endeca as the preferred data discovery tool.
Prior to the initiation of pilot, case studies in the area of warranty & quality data, customer survey responses and
D&B data were prepared, and expectations from the pilot were outlined. Upon completion of pilot, the
outcomes were evaluated and a decision was taken to implement Endeca Information Discovery on an enter-
prise platform. Accordingly, we helped the client in designing the architecture and installing components. We
are also providing ongoing platform support, apart from helping business users in extracting more out of the
investment made in Endeca.
The solution has the corporate data governance policy defined through various security mechanisms such as
LDAP and administered in Endeca. Power users and data analysts have also got the flexibility to upload data of
specific volume and define key parameters for even quicker data discovery, with minimal training.
