“ Design of LV Winding ”

L.V. Winding • A transformer is a static device.

• The primary and secondary windings of oil filled transformers are made with aluminium or electrolytic copper.

• The main reason behind the LV winding placed nearer to core is the heat which is proportional to the copper losses occurring in the wires or winding.

• This heat produced is larger in High Voltage winding than in Low Voltage winding so for the heat to travel outside the transformer and to avoid the damage to the transformer the high voltage winding is placed outside the low voltage winding so that more heat flows outside the transformer easily.

• If HV winding is placed inside LV winding then heat produced the Core and LV winding will burn.

Design

• The choice of current density depends on the allowable temperature rise, copper loss and method of cooling.• After finding the cross section area of LV conductor , the dimension of

conductor are selected as per IS table of copper conductors.
