Introduced in he middle of XX century. First popular arcade games were early amusement park midway games – shooing galleries, ball toss games and coin-operated machines.

In 1966, Sega introduced a submarine simulator and light gun shooter, called Periscope, which became a worldwide success in Japan, Europe and North America. It was the first arcade game to cost a quarter per play.
