History

• It can be tracked back to the Aztec and Maya

• About 2500 to 3000 years ago

• The Aztecs considered blessing to die in child birth, battle, or human sacrifice, because it was said they would have an afterlife

Dia De los Muertos

• It is Tradition• It is a day for Friends and family to remember the

dead• It is the only day the souls return to enjoy the

pleasures that they had in life• Celebrated in November 1st and 2nd

• They take marigolds because its known as the flower of the dead.

• It is not a depressing time• it is a period full of life, happiness, color food,

family and fun.

Tradition

• Traditional food is “Pan de Muertos”

• The bread is made of a shape of a skull and cross bones

• It is said to be good luck if you bite the bread and you get the skull that is hidden in the bread.

• Paths of marigold pedals are scattered from the cemetery to the house of the family, Because it is said that the spirit will follow the yellow path

• They go and clean the grave, and decorate it with offerings

• They leave pillows and blankets outside so the souls can ret from their journey

• Some people spend the night next to the grave

What do they do in that Day?

• Remember the Dead• The people take food• There are parades• They dance because it is said that the noise will

wake up the soul• They make altars for the dead, which the alter

contains the Christian cross and the picture of the deceased person

Where its celebrated

• Its mostly celebrated in Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, and other central and South American with Latino background

• In Peru instead of having the offerings all October to November, they just put in on November second

November 1st and 2nd

• November 2nd is the official day of the dead,• Dates correspond with the catholic celebration of the day

of the Saints and of the soul• November first is the day the souls of the kids

come “Angelitos”, and also known as “Dia de Los Inocentes”

• They put toys, candy, and miniature cups and plates for the kids

• November second the adults come back

• And give them the best food the family can buy
