Candy Cane Cookies
My last official holiday cookie post. Act ually , it's also my la st post of
the y ear! I can't believ e 201 1 is almost ov er. Happy N ew Year's Ev e!
Every y ear I alway s want to put something minty in my cookie
boxes. Peppermint just seem s to be a must dur ing t he h oliday season
wh at wi th seeing can dy canes a ll ov er th e pla ce. I wa s tem pted t o
remake last y ear'smint chocolate chip truffles, but decided at the
last minute to try something new this year . I searched for candy
cane cookie recipe and found these cute cookies. They 're super festiv eand just m inty enough, a w onderful addition to a set of holiday
cookies.

Mix the dry ingr edients: flour, bakin g powder, and salt. Set aside for
now. In a separate bowl, cream th e butter an d sugar together. Add
the egg. Then mix in the milk and peppermint extra ct. Add the dry
ingredients and mix until a dough comes together. Split the dough in
half. Wrap one half on plastic wrap and refrigerate.
Add red food colorin g t o the other ha lf of th e doug h a nd m ix un til th e
coloring is ev enly distributed. Then wr ap the red dough in pla stic
wr ap a nd r efr igera te. The doug h sh ould be ch illed for a bout 3 hou rs.
Preheat th e oven to 37 5F. To shape the cookies, first divide the tw o
dough s into 50 pieces each. Take one r ed piece of dough and one wh ite
piece of dough. Roll both dough pieces into 5 inch snakes. Twist t he
two snakes together. Pinch th e two ends of the twist.
Roll the whole twist a bit a gain st the table so the tw o dough snakes
stick better together. Then place the twist on a parchment lined
bakin g sh eet. Hook down th e top of th e tw ist to form a c an dy cane
shape. Repeat with the r est of the dough. Bake the cookies for 8-10
minutes, or until the bottoms begin browning. Leave on the baking
sheet a few minu tes, then m ove to a wire r ack to finish cooling.
Makes 50 cookies.
