Speech-Language Pathologist

75% of each day is spent

communicating…

… but only 7% is

spoken out loud.

55% of all communication is through body language…

… 38% is through tone of voice.

1 in 10 Americans…

have some form of a communication

disorder.

7.5 million people have a voice

disorder,

Stuttering affects 3 million people,

… mostly children between

the age of 2 and 6.

5% of all children have a noticeable communication disorder.

1 out of 110 children in the

United States have Autism…

…with a primary characteristic of…

… difficulty with communication.

The English language

is made up of 44 sounds…

… but only has

26 letters.

“Literacy is defined as the ability to

read, write and

speak at levels proficient to function on the job and in society”

(National Literacy Act, 1991)

More than

1.4 million students

in U.S. public schools …

have a speech-language

impairment as a

primary disability.

Kids want speech therapy not so they

can talk better,

but…

Speech pathologists work to improve communication…

as well as quality of life across the life span…

In schools as well as…

clinics hospitals

private practice nursing homes

Speech Language Pathologists must have a

Master’s degree,

and pass a national exam…

… in order to obtain a license

to practice in South Carolina.

Speech Pathologists also earn national certification with aCertificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA…

upon completion of a clinical fellowship year.

They must also obtain teacher certification in order to practice

in public schools.

Students need to be prepared

for jobs that don’t even exist yet,

to meet needs we haven’t even identified,

using technologies that haven’t even been created.
