CALENDAR EVENTSBudding photographers are picturingthemselves successful at IndependenceHigh School as part of IHS’s JAG (Jobsfor America’s Graduates) program. Fourstudents have developed a sustainableenterprise providing photography servicesto the staff and students of IndependenceHigh School. Lianna Garza, one of theCEOs of Soaring Images, explained,“We believe it is important to offerprofessional photography to families ata great price”. Students are responsiblefor creating the backdrops for the shoots,scheduling appointments, taking pictures,and delivering the final product to clients.There have been two photo shoots: anoutdoor fall carnival and an indoor wintertheme, giving students the opportunity toutilize different kinds of lighting techniques.Great photographs aren’t the only benefitof this program, as students learn a skill

they will use throughout life: interactingwith clients. “I’m more social, comfortableand confident with my photographyskills through this business”, said AntonioCastillo. Colleague Shyann Sanchezagreed, adding, “I love the interactionwith my photo subjects. When I hold acamera I’m an art/masterpiece creator.”

The fourth member of the enterprise, KyaraRobinson, commented, “I love seeing theworld through a different lens”.

The fledgling business has benefitedfrom different mentors including RRPSstaff member, Denis Desaindes, aphotographer in his own right. “Thesestudents are extremely receptive tosuggestions and eager to ask questionsthat will enhance their skills”, he said. “It’sexciting to work with them.”

JAG is a school-to-career program that hasbeen implemented in 1,000 high schools,colleges and middle schools across theUSA. IHS JAG Specialist Celeste Parrishis especially enthusiastic about SoaringImages. “I am proud of the work my JAGstudents have accomplished this year.Their effort and dedication to the successof our program has definitely set the barfor what it truly means to be a leader inschool and in the community.”

Did your student ride the bus on December1st? Thank you for supporting the 80-DayTransportation Count for funding! Ourtotal student ridership count increased by526 students over the previous 80-DayCount; which should result in additionaltransportation funding. The next “ride thebus” day is February 8, 2017.
