Sparta and Athens are both located near the Aegean Sea.

Sparta is a plain between the Aegean Sea and mountains.

Athens is located in a region called Attica, and lies near the Aegean Sea.

Though Sparta did trade, they did not rely on it.

Sparta was a little different from other

Greek city-states because……..

Women had more freedom,

and led more active lives. This

would improve their physical

strength.

Sparta also had slaves…

But they belonged to the city as a whole, not individual families.

Spartan’s also didn’t have

a “normal” education….

Their idea of education was to create a strong

warrior.

Athenians were also proud, because they

thought of themselves as the

“shining star” of the Greek city-states.

Most homes had female slaves too….

Women didn’t have the same freedoms as

And instead of being taught how to read

and write…..

Girls were taught house skills.

It was primarily based on trade

They traded with other city-states, along with some civilizations in the Mediterranean

Athenians bought and sold goods at

the Agora

and they made their own coins

Sparta did not use coins

In Sparta, girls went to school to learn how to fight.

The boys were trained to become

warriors.

During training the children were little food.

They were encouraged to steal food, but if they were

caught they would get punished.

Athenian boys went to school at age 7.

The girls were taught at

home by there mothers.

Athens was famed for commitment for arts and

science.

Sparta and Athens worshipped all the same Gods.

They both practiced Paganism.

In many ways Sparta and Athens were alike

but they were also different in many ways too
