Stage Musicals

A Digital CollectionKristin AmsdenAileen MarshallTheresa Wagner

Planning Process

• Finding a topic– Stage musicals was a

topic for which we all had a keen interest

– All had physical objects in this area that we wanted to share.

Planning Process

• Creating purpose– Focus on just a few stage productions to offer

depth– Target audience

Digitization Process

• Digitized own contributions to project– i.e. playbills, music, etc.

• Did not have set requirements on types • Each used different equip as available

A few examples…

Digitization Specs

• We had to agree upon spec even though we were using different equipment for the digitization process.

• Images• We chose to scan these at this rate in order to have a manageable file

size for our end users, while still maintaining the image quality of the original.

• Resolution: 300 x 300 dpi• Depth: 24 bit color• Hardware: Epson Expression 10000 XL scanner / HP Photosmart C4180

All-in-One / Epson Perfection V700• Software: Adobe Photoshop Pro / Gimp

Specs• Text• Both grayscale and black and white imaging was used to

digitize our text objects. For the sheet music, the grayscale gave better reproduction quality.

• Resolution: 300 x 300 dpi• Depth: 8 bit grayscale• Hardware: Epson Expression 10000 XL scanner / HP

Photosmart C4180 All-in-One• Software: Adobe PrintShop Pro, also collected and

OCRed with Adobe Acrobat 8.0•

Specs

• Video• These were downloaded from Youtube and then converted to

usable formats.• Software: OnlineVideoConverter.com to convert flash video

to MPEG file, Windows Movie Maker to clean up video quality / FVL to MPEG Converter for Ipod .5.3

• File type: mpeg• Variable bit rate• Resolution: 320 x 240 pixels, aspect: 4:3, 30 frames/sec

Metadata

• Which standard– Dublin Core

• Justification– Flexibility– Have some optional fields

Required Fields• Title• Subject• Description• Publisher • Date Digital• Type • Format• Source• Website

Optional Fields

• Title Alternative• Creator• Contributor• Contributing Institution• Language• Date Original• Resource Identifier• Rights Management

Problems & Solutions

• Differences in Tech Experience– Each of us had a diff level of tech competency– Caused some confusion esp when communicating

over e-mail

• Possible Solution– Make sure to discuss these differences in person

at the beginning

Problems & Solutions

• Group Organization– Never named an official group leader or other

group functions– Work would have been more efficient

• Solution– Name a group leader to help facilitate discussion

and keep the focus of the project in order.

Problems & Solutions

• Division of functions of the DL team– It was rather inefficient for each member to go all

the tasks in preparing the objects for digitization

• Solution– Have one person do I ndividual functions like one

digitize, another apply metadata, etc.– Hard to do since we all live in diff. cities.

Which DAMS?

• There were many to choose from• Chose ContentDM• Reasons– Can upload to the Web– Most widely used software– Ease of Project Client interface
