The Elements

of a

Photographic Portrait

Composition

Your goal as you arrange or compose your model in your photograph, usually in the “Portrait” or vertical format, is to make it an interesting image.

Rule of Thirds

The most attention getting part of an image or(center of interest) should fall approximately at the intersection of lines that divide the image into thirds

Poor Composition

The center of interest here does not follow the Rule of Thirds

Lighting

The way light hits your subject will effect the mood of the photograph. The Photographer must set the lights for the desired effect

Shooting

As the photographer, you are the one responsible for the way a photograph looks, not the model or the subject. Don’t shoot until the subject is right

Editing

Digital photographs can be adjusted or “edited” with computer software. You can change the size, color, shapes, or all aspects of a photograph.

Crop:You can crop or cut away unwanted parts of the picture, this may also be done with editing software

Uses for Portraits

Photography is used everyday by artists and designers in a wide variety of applications
