Work on bond-supported Secondary LearningCenter to begin soon at Black River High campus
March 30, 2010―Work to build the new Secondary Learning Center on the Black
River High School site will begin in the coming school year.
The new learning center is part of the district’s long-range plan to renovate or
rebuild schools throughout the district. Funding for the Secondary Learning
Center was approved by voters in a bond measure in May 2008, which also
included 10 new classrooms at Hazen High School, renovations at Lindbergh High School, an Early Childhood
Center and more.
Construction at the new site will take about two years, during which time the district will hone programs design
options to be offered at the new learning center. The center will house high school students and offer
specialized programs to help students stay engaged in school and graduate college or career ready.
Students and staff to relocate to other schools
About 150 students are currently enrolled at Black River High
School. The school expects about 25 of those students to graduate
this year. Working with Black River staff, the remaining students
will relocate into district schools and programs that best meet their
individual education needs and goals, including into nearby SartoriEducation Center and into comprehensive schools. A few could
choose to complete high school credits while also enrolled in
programs at local community colleges.
Black River staff will work with the Secondary Education Office and
Human Resources for placement in district schools and programs.
New Center offers opportunities for innovative thinking about alternative learning
The new Secondary Learning Center offers the district an opportunity to be innovative in its approach to
alternative high school learning. Current thinking is to offer students more meaningful connections with college
and university programs, technology-driven instruction, incorporation of “green energy technology” instruction,
and myriad other opportunities. The district’s target is to have the new center open for the 2012-2013 school
year.
Students and staff move to other schools to make way for construction
“The new Secondary Learning Center will bring new thinking and a fresh approach to
learning for high school students in our alternative programs.”
―Superintendent Dr. Mary Alice Heuschel
