Writing about poetry

So what do you think of poetry at the moment?

Writing about poetry

A poet's mission is to make words do more work than they normally do, to make them work on more than one level, so you can use them to get at complicated truths in a way that straightforward storytelling fails to do.

Structure

A skilful poet will use structure to support the meaning of the poem. It includes:

» What ideas, images of feelings occur in each stanza?

» Is the structure appropriate for the topic?

» Does the structure reflect the topic of the poem? eg. A shape poem.

This limerick has a short and bouncy structure, which adds to its entertaining message. It reads quickly, so the reader doesn’t dwell on the message

The form a poem takes can hint at meaning.

A haiku is usually about human experience and emotions.

A limerick is nearly always a nonsense poem intended for fun.

A sonnet is nearly always about love.

Example 2: Limerick

There once was a teacher from leads,

Who swallowed a packet of seeds.

In less than an hour,

Her nose was a flower,

And her hair was covered in weeds.

This poem has 5 lines, a rhyme scheme of aabba. That makes is a limerick. Therefore, the reader knows it is intended as humour.

Language

This is the MOST IMPORTANT ONE.

• Words (adjectives, verbs)• Techniques (similes, metaphors,

repetition)

Language

Why would a poet choose a word like…

Language

• Words are loaded with meaning!!

Imagery

• This is the IMAGES that the poem CREATES IN YOUR MIND. i.e. what you think of when you read it

Do you ever feel like a plastic bagDrifting through the wind, wanting

to start again?Do you ever feel, feel so paper thinLike a house of cards, one blow from

caving in?

Baby, you're a fireworkCome on, let your colors burstMake 'em go, oh, oh, ohYou're gonna leave 'em falling down
