LOCAL STORIESLeah Kapral grew up in Ocean Shores and as a teenager experienced social isolation and a lot of "nothingness" happening in Ocean Shores for kids and the community. After moving back here 5 years ago...the "nothingness" still exists!! Being single, I experience feelings of being disconnected and often commute to other towns for services or leisure.

Three years ago I went along to a meeting at Ocean Shores Community Centre to better understand what happens in my community. There are a number of great dances, martial arts and yoga classes

happening at the community centre and it is great to support things that are happening here locally.

I love connecting people and seeing the outcomes when a group works together for common goals. Since joining I have helped the centre put together a website, organised the Ocean Shores Community Day and working with Council on a new front extension for community service delivery with potential for a neighbourhood centre. Projects like these make me feel like I am making a little difference in the world and to my community.

Mama bake - 39 children and 19 Mamas were counted for the biggest ever MamaBake which took place in the beautiful village hall of little ole Eureka: a hamlet in northern NSW, Australia.

Women came armed with gigantuan pots and pans, fresh aromatic herbs and citrus fresh from their gardens, take away containers and snacks for the children. Gatherings of this size happen about once every school holiday. Mamas come from across the shires to be part of it. Generally, the sweet spot number for regular, more local MamaBake groups is about four.

This is a fantastic example of how a local hall can be used for so many different activities.

If These Halls Could Talk is a multi-arts project by Arts Northern Rivers, celebrating our halls and the role they play in our communities. Seven halls from across the Northern Rivers were selected from hundreds of nominations to have a renowned artist or artistic team collaborate with their community.

Over a four month period, people were invited to take a tour of these halls to experience them now and go back into their past to witness the events and meet the people that have made them what they are today. Your guides are some of the country’s most exciting contemporary artists and performers who have created temporary site-specific works inspired by the unique narrative of each hall.

Imagine a similar project at your local hall, engaging artists, the local community and everything that is great about the hall that lays at the heart.
