 Kennel Club dog photographer of the year 2016

The Kennel Club has announced the winners of its annual Dog Photographer of the Year competition. Now in its tenth year, the competition received almost 13,000 entries from a staggering 90 different countries.

Jamie Morgan’s two Afghan hounds won first place in the portrait category

First place in the puppy category was won by Linda Storm from the US, of a rescue puppy enjoying a bowl of milk.

Lou, formerly a working dog, photographed by Kristi Oikawa from Canada, took third place in the dogs at work category

This shot of a man and his dog travelling by train, which has won first place in the man’s best friend category, was taken by the UK’s Fiona Sami

A service dog from the West Midlands fire brigade, photographed by Robert James Dray from the UK, has won second place in the dogs at work category

Elouise Leland won second place in the dogs at play category for her image of two puppies

First place in the oldies category goes to Kevin Smith from the UK

Second place in the portrait category was won by Andrey Ershov from Russia

Third place in the I love dogs because… (under 18) category was won by Jasmine Ottley from the UK, who submitted this picture of Sidney the pug who has almost 12,000 Instagram followers

Polina Ulyanova, from the US, has won third place in the man’s best friend category

Daniel Nygaard won third place in the dogs at play category with his jumping dalmatian

Going for a paddle: US entrant Bruce Lehman was awarded 2nd place in the Man's Best Friend category after he submitted this photograph.

Hugo the labrador retriever has won first place in the I love dogs because… (under 18) category, with the award taken by Jade Hudson from the UK

Tom Lowe’s four-year-old westie, Baxter, emerging from Loch Lomond won first place in the dogs at play category

Loyalty: Michael Higginson, from Preston, Lancashire, took a photo of his brother Dale with family pet Esta. It won the Assistance Dogs and Dog Charities category.

Tranquil: This year's overall winner was Anastasia Vetkoyskaya, from Russia, for her atmospheric photo of Sheldon the English Springer Spaniel taking an early morning Autumn dip.

The perfect companion: Ed Felker from the USA took this picture of Finn, a certified therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International, who visits hospitals and nursing homes to comfort those in need.Michael Higginson, from Preston, Lancashire, took a photo of his brother Dale with family pet Esta. It won the Assistance Dogs and Dog Charities category.

Colombian Adriana Bernal came 2nd in the Oldies catergory with her image of a 10-year-old Irish Setter resting in an arm chair

Lending a helping hand: Diana Andersen, from Australia, submitted this image of a lady with her assistance dog. The photo won 2nd place in the Assistance Dogs and Dog Charities category in the Kennel Club Dog Photographer of the Year competition.

Rogerio Araujo, from Brazil, came 3rd in the Portrait category with his image

Smile! Advait Huggahalli, from the US, took this adorable photo. It picked up 3rd place in the I Love Dogs Because.. (under 18) category.

Another British entrant, Cat Race, took a picture of a solemn dog waiting for its owner to return
