• This is a poster made in 1942 by Lawrence Beall Smith to get people to buy war bonds which will help the U.S. military during WW2 against the Nazi’s.

• Who is the intended audience?

• The intended audience is Americans who are adults that care for children and hate the Nazi’s.

• What is the intention of this poster?

• The intention of this poster is to get the U.S. citizens to put money into war bonds which will help support the military funds. Doing this makes the people feel like they are helping with the war cause.

• What techniques and composition factors are used?

• The light is shining on the front of the kids to give them an angelic glow and so they stand out from the dark swastika in the background. The light emphasizes the kids as the focal point.

• The background is green in both the picture and the caption so that everything not green is emphasized. Notice how none of the kids are wearing green. If they were then it would take away from them as the focal point. Also notice how “War Bonds” is capitalized, in bold font, and is colored yellow. This is to make the viewer understand immediately the intent of the poster.

• Does this poster appeal to ethos?

• If you see this poster and don’t know the author, the only thing that shows his credibility is he cares for the children, America, and the war cause. No other information is given about him.

• Does this poster appeal to pathos?

• The main emotion of this poster is the fear the children show. Seeing these kids scared makes the audience angry at the Nazi’s which then makes the audience want to buy war bonds to protect the children and get back at the Nazi’s. The phrase “Don’t Let That Shadow Touch Them” makes the audience want to come to the protection of the kids as well.

• The use of the American flag also makes the audience feel pride in there country and with the little boy holding it makes the audience want to fight so the kids will have a good future in America. The way the audience will “fight” is through buying war bonds.

• Does this poster appeal to logos?

• The logic behind this poster is that the Nazi’s want to take over the world and if they aren’t defeated they will eventually take over America. (Their “Shadow” will reach America.) Therefore the only way to stop this is if the audience buys war bonds.
