LEND A HELPING HAND
Our town needs a group t o help people who have various needs. We have an older lady who
really needs the outside of her house painted, she can't do i t herself and can't afford the paint
either. Someone might need a ride t o the doctor, help w i th a broken window, a leaking faucet,
the list goes on and one. Some of these people fall through the cracks and don't get the help
they need because they don' t know who to call or h o w t o ask. A group of volunteers wil l fill that
void. This is no t for people who can afford t o pay for help, it's for those of us who can't. It is for
individuals not any business. If you have such a need call Debbie Quintana @ 775 537 7842 and
she will t ry and find someone t o help you. If you can volunteer t ime t o help someone in need
call her and get on her list (we already have 7 volunteers). If you do not have the skill or health
t o help you could donate money t o buy paint and supplies or f ind out what is needed and buy
some of i t . We are all in this together and someday you may be the one in need. Call now to
volunteer in whatever way that you can.

Book Report: Leaving Time----Jodi Picoult
Alice, an elephant researcher disappeared from an elephant sanctuary after a tragic accident 10
yrs. ago. Daughter Jenna, now 13, has spent years searching for her mother. With the aide of a
psychic "Serenity Jones" (who now doubts her gifts) and a washed up private detective who
once investigated the case, the 3 work together t o find what happened to Alice. More than just
this story are the wonderful explorations into the lives, loves, deaths of elephants. How they
experience grief and mourn the death of one of their own. The ending will leave you reeling
and possibly shedding many tears. Jodi i s a master at probing human emotions in her various
books, she is able t o get into the mindsets of each of her characters. She's written powerful
books on teen suicide, teen school shootings, family with an "Asperger" child, story of parents
who have another baby to save the life of a dying child t o just name a few of her books. To
read one of her books is t o want to read her others. P.J. Minshall

Putting out fires is our job at the fire department . Its not terrebly dangerous because we do it the way we are trained and we just take precautions & don't take chances . Its kind-a fun putting out fires 7 a little bit exciting , but usually we are called out in the middle of the night and it is never convienent .
Lately the fire business has gotten a little bit out of hand . We have had four fires already this year ( some years we only have one ) . At all four of them we had a sheriff's Deputy at the fire asking questions . At all four of them it looked like someone set the fire . There may have been carelessness involved , It may not have been intentional . That is not for your fire department to decide , that is for the Sheriff's office to decide .
But to have four fires in six months and none of them entirely accidental . Maybe it s time for the fire chief to say something about carelessness with fire , and to point out that if the Sheriff's office chooses to get involved , there can be serious
FIRE DEPARTMENT NOTES
consequences for the individuals who started them
It is sort-of the fire departments place to teach some fire safety , We will make practical suggestions in the news letter and we will visit the elementary school . but there is a limit to what we can teach with suggestions and giving away coloring books & refrigerator magnets . Adults and adolescents are sort-of beyond listening to us preaching that you don't play with matches or that fireworks often start fires . When the Sheriff's office gets involved , they are not looking to teach anything , they are looking to see if a crime has been committed and in some cases carelessness or ignorance of what open burning is permitted can still be a crime .
All I can ask adults , as your fire chief , is that when you strike a match , think about whether what you are about to burn could bring fire trucks to your home or get you in trouble with the law . All I can do for adolescents is urge parents that their kids are probably beyond teachable by school teachers and fire fighters and , as parents , you have only a few years left to get it into the
heads of their kids that fires destroy property , destroy homes , are often way difficult to put out , and can get you into big trouble with the law .
On a happier note ; the new facebook page that your fire department put up is getting a few visits and a few "likes" and may be helping to put the accomplishments of the fire department out where the community can better see what we are doing . On facebook, search " AmargosaFire " and give us a look .
