Dos and Don’ts of submitting a proposal
#H2020GridsStorage Energy
In the very beginning….
• Attend networking, brokerage events – opportunity to find new partners and assess the competition
• Engage with and use your national contact points and enterprise agencies
• Read call documents and then read again and again

Early Sense check
Must address expected impact – your idea must match call not the other way round!
• Think beyond the scientific excellence
o IMPACT!!
o Bring European players together!
o Lead to innovation!
Scoring matrix – GO or NO GO to proceed with the proposal?

Clear, Concise Ideas
• Get the concept clear before starting with the details
• Think beyond the scientific excellence
• Define the concept well and concisely

Building the consortium
• Minimum of 3 EU countries or associated countries
• Don’t bring in your ‘friends’ unless they have a clear role!
• Strong coordinator is required!!!
• Organise meetings early in the preparation phase!!

Writing the proposal
• One author is better than multiple authors!
• Write it with the evaluator in mind – tell the story!
• Have clear measurable objectives!
• What is the impact?
• Data management & Ethics are VERY important – anywhere
there are users involved this is key!

Writing the proposal
• Discuss exploitation – individual and joint exploitation
• Pay careful attention to work plan development, PM resources and costs!
• For innovation actions a draft business plan is needed in the form of your exploitation statements

Content is King but don’t forget the soft touches….
#H2020GridsStorage Energy
Familiarize yourself with the proposal template and the ECAS portal
• Take a good look at the proposal template
o it clearly shows what you have to address
• Use the ECAS participant portal
o entering “simple” data early avoids a rush at the end
• Submit a draft proposal early
o - and keep submitting!
#H2020GridsStorage Energy
Focus on potential bottlenecks early
• Administrative framework of all partners
o Does every partner have a PIC number?
o Are all roles assigned in the participants portal?
• Administrative forms and tabulated data
o Do we have all information to fill those in?
• Content of the proposal
o What input do we need from which partner?

Final stages • Ask people, who are not involved, to review your
proposal
o in particular people outside your field and even non-scientists
• Involve Horizon2020 experts
o internal, e.g. legal and administrative staff
o external, e.g. your national contact points
Make sure you submit well before the deadline!
Need to score very highly - competition is fierce!!
