ConMICShield®

Even today, almost 60 years after the 1945 discovery of Microbial Induced Corrosion(MIC) by C.D. Parker we continue to incorrectly refer to the corrosive deterioration of sewer pipe as “a H2S Gas Problem”

The History

ConMICShield®

The primary problem for concrete in the sewer environment is Thiobacillus thiooxidans(concretivorous) – Latin for “concrete-eating”

Microbiologically Induced Corrosion

The History

ConMICShield®

It is the sulfuric acid (H2SO4) that is produced when the Thiobacillus thiooxidans bacteria metabolize the H2S that actually corrodes the concrete

The Challenges

STEP 1:

Anaerobic bacteria, which do not require oxygen, form in raw sewage and produce hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S).

Factors contributing to rapid bacterial growth are temperature, retention time, high BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) levels, and turbulence.

STEP 2:

Turbulence from force mains, drop manholes, steep grade changes and pumping stations allow the hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) to release into the atmosphere in pipes and manholes.

STEP 3:

Sulfide gas (H2S) is converted into sulfuric acid (H2SO4) by the aerobic Thiobacillus bacteria that grow on the concrete surfaces above the wastewater flows. Only Thiobacillus can convert the H2S to sulfuric acid.

STEP 4:

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) produced by the Thiobacillusbacteria quickly corrode the concrete, resulting in severe structural damage to the pipe and manholes.

Protective coatings often delaminate, crack, develop pinhole leaks, disintegrate and allow corrosion to continue unchecked.

ConMICShield®

A simple to use liquid concrete admixture molecularly bonds to the cement particles of the concrete.

EPA registration 708712-12

ConMICShield®

The active ingredient in ConMICShield®

(Germicidal Quaternary Ammonium Salts) forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer, which chemically bonds to the cement molecules.

I = Innermost Layer

ConMICShield®

ConMICShield®

When a single cell microorganism comes in contact with the ConMICShield®, which is bonded to the cement, the cell membrane ruptures and the organism dies.

ConMICShield®

Since nothing is transferred to the now dead cell, ConMICShield® doesn’t lose strength and is ready for the next cell to contact it.

Brief Story about Miami-Dade

Manhole # 40 Harbour DriveKey Biscayne, FL

Miami-Dade, FL Public Works had a high H2S area which was notorious for eating concrete manholes.

It would be very satisfactory to them if, in this area, a plain concrete manhole could survive a year of service. They routinely inspect this line every six months and manhole replacement is an ongoing project.

The Stainless Steel Cables holding the ConMICShield® test pieces have been replaced several times. These are the original

ConMICShield® test pieces of 3 different mix designs. They are 5 years old.

There is evidence of some scouring of the concrete; but this manhole is #1 out of a force main, and has served well for 5

years in this environment.

The manhole next to #40 about 15 feet away was to have been protected by a coating.
