community colleges to create pathways for H.S. students to

complete college credit/certificates of study

while in high school

General Education Certificate=Freshman Year of College

What is Dual Enrollment? An enrichment program that allows eligible

high school students the opportunity to take courses in high school and college at the same time

NOVA college courses may fulfill Virginia high school graduation requirements and begin a college transcript towards a degree or certificate program

What are the Benefits? Opportunity to take challenging courses

and accelerate their secondary and post secondary education

Facilitates a seamless transition from high school to college

Gives students confidence in their abilities to meet college challenges

Begins work towards Virginia’s General Education Certificate or other college certificate program

Dual Enrollment Vocabulary:Concurrent (choose from already PWCS articulated courses): When students are earning both high school and college credit for a course.

Courses may be taken at the high school, the campus or through online; students may be taking multiple courses using one or two of the options

Permission form is a contract that the school signs indicating they will give high school credit for the college course taken

Contract (set-up for groups/classes):

Classes are taught in the high school combining college and high school course requirements preferably taught by a H.S. teacher with

required credentials for NOVA faculty; NOVA mentor in discipline assigned to work with teacher

NOVA on-line teacher introduces new materials and controls the course content / high school learning coach handles class management and reinforces materials

NOVA adjunct teaches in the high school with learning coach; limited by workload restrictions

or $23 per credit hour = $759 for freshman year (33 hours)

NOVA in-state rate or $153= $5049 NOVA out-state rate or $350=

$11,550 GMU = $404.50 (In)

Guaranteed Admissions Agreements (GAA)

NOVA has a Guaranteed Admission Agreement (GAA) program available to

all its students who graduate from NOVA and meet the agreement requirements of the college or

university. The program gives you an opportunity to save thousands in

tuition costs. Agreements stand with over 63 VA and DC colleges and

universities.Specific agreements can be found at

Will the Courses Transfer to Other Colleges and

Universities? Colleges and universities have specific

policies regarding acceptance of transfer credits

Many credits earned through dual enrollment typically transfer to four-year colleges and universities

Contact the college or university you are considering, to discuss the transferability of dual enrollment courses or talk to a counselor at NOVA for more information

Who is Eligible to Participate and What are the Requirements?

Junior and senior high school students

Must get a satisfactory score on the college placement test or approved alternatives (SAT, ACT, PSAT, SOL’s)

Must complete the appropriate dual enrollment permission form with necessary signatures

Program Benefits

Classes are taught at Battlefield during the school day

Students earn high school and college credit simultaneously

Begin building a college transcript

Application Process1. Discuss your options with parents and/or

counselor; if planning to take college English or Political Science courses, talk with your current teacher about this option

2. Apply to NOVA online using full legal name which will allow you to get a NOVA Student ID number and access to a NOVA email account

3. Obtain a permission form from the counseling office and get all needed signatures

4. Take the college placement test given at Battlefield

5. Register for the dual enrollment course(s) during course selection with your counselor
